Help choosing cam/head/intake combo

I currently have a '72 LS5 4 spd with 427 L88 heads, an aftermarket intake and carb, stock pistons and cam. That's the way it was when I bought it :crazy. The engine is tired and in need of a rebuild. I am looking for decent street performance. I'm sure the heads hepled by boosting my compression somewhat, but I'm not too impressed with them, as they are more suited for higher RPM racing applications. My thought is going back to the original heads, which I have, increase compression with new pistons, and install a new cam with a matching intake and carb. Any thoughts? My biggest concern is with the heads, casting #3999241, as far as flow. I'm not sure what size valves these have . Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated! Sorry this was so long :nono.

I am involved in a NHRA D/SA class stocker . '71 LS-5 . The stock intakes are 2.07 and will get you 425- 450 hp with a 3 angle valve job and a min. spec. blueprinted engine. The stock hyd. cam has .460/.480 lift and about 205 duration at .050. Of course we run a special stock legal hyd. cam that has 252 degreees at .050 / with the legal lift.

Any aftermarket intake is better than the stock iron Q-jet we have to run ; so use what you have and use a cam with around 230-240 degrees at .050 for the street.

Put it together right , checking clearances , and let the cubic inches work for you .

They are probably 110cc raw factory cast. Minimum spec. is 105cc.

In fact ,we are going out to test a different convertor,today. Hoping for 11.60s. Our index is 11.80
