I finally rolled sleeper into her winter nook and was making sure that I had lots of room to work on it over the winter, and while checking it out I noticed a few oddities. So some help in Identifing these parts and what they do would be appreciated.

Towards the bottom of the picture is the steering rod.

This is shown from the drivers side, the cable run along side the oil filter.

Still on drivers side, just along side the dual exhaust.

I am perplexed by that same cable on my car? Mine ends right around the front of the transmission... I couldn't figure out what it was hooked up to before though?

Could it be the transmission interlock cable? Can you take the key out with the transmission in gear? Should not be able to. The interlock cable forces you to put the trans in Park (on automatic) or in reverse (on standards) before being able to remove the key.

Just a thought. :D

I have a 400 auto, and looking at the picture all I can make out that it could be would be "manual shaft" but is it that? and what does this part do? as mine has obviously been disconnected for quite sometime.

The original owner of the car had the item in picture set 2 identified as 'whats this?' wired up. For fear of screwing something up I dont want to undo the home made wire job till I can safetly identify what it is and does.

Having it wired up doesnt seem to hurt the shifting or anything as I managed to put 1k on it since I've owned it.

The cable that was there is the backdrive cable for the th350. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but I know the 400 doesn't have one. I too still have the bracket on the steering column and on the right side of the tranny pan.

Small pictures

It appeares to be the interlock cable.

When the keys out.. it locks the tranny into reverse ( on a manual ) and park on an auto.

Based on how rusty things look.. I would NOT connect it.. I removed mine on my 73.

wicky88s1975,
According to the AIM pics they both have the same shaft in about the same spot, but doesnt explain what it does being an AIM and all, I decided to flip thru the Hayes manual, and they have almost the same pic, again identifing it as "Manual Shaft" but no explaination.

vigman,
sorry for small pics but I was trying to keep within the size limit. A for the rust..its only surface rust, when I move the lever that is wired it moves freely so rust is not a concern.

Ok so assuming that it is the interlock, other than hooking back up a new cable what else might I run into? I dont like broken parts so I would rather fix it or remove it.

The whole engine will be getting cherry picked this winter and major overhaul is in its future in addition to repainted to offset the surface rust that happens up here in the great white north.

It was a 0 rust car till I got my hands on it, and not having proper storage conditions for it (lack of garage space), mother nature took over the rest. I have however just built a nice little storage shed for it so I can keept it protected and work on it over the winter.

Oh ya.. I know its a hyda 400, It was a major rebuild last year, basically the only thing left of the transmission thats original is the housing. 1200 and change worth of rebuild.

Bill

I think you guys are right on the interlock cable, I can take the keys out in any gear (4-speed) and I know it is supposed to be only in reverse... I guess that means I am gonna get that thing out of there, i didn't wanna mess with it until i had it ID'd... I am glad this thread reminded me about it.

Thanks

wicky88s1975,

Steering column is on the bottom of the picture, stock original manifold is on the top.
