Well, as suspected, the 23 year old Q-Jet gave up the ghost. Turns out the base of the Carb is warped and won't seal. The Vacuum leakage causes the idle to wander all over the place, and naturally... fail emissions inspection.

Anyone have any advice on a DIRECT REPLACEMENT carb? I'm not going nuts and re-doing the motor, I just want a good performing carb, maybe a little better than stock, but on a budget.

Thanks,
Steve :w

Hi: Are you looking to keep it original & stock?

Not necessarily original. Direct replacement becasue I don't want to start fooling around with the intake manifold & other stuff, plus here in Virginia, I still need to pass smog tests.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Steve: Check Holley's site www.holley.com carb that should work for your engine is a Model 4175 (part # 0-80555S). Should be a direct bolt on. Also, check with Summit Racing in Ohio: Ask for their Tech Dept. The guys there are really nice & helpful & can give you good advise as to what will work good for your engine.
Take care & good luck!

Steve,

Could be wrong but Corvette Central sells direct repalcement Q jets. I think for my 72 less than 300.

I don't know a lot about carbs, but I have heard that the Q-jet was not a very good carb.

I don't know about VA, but I see used Q-Jets in the classifieds quite often, for very little money.

Neepawa: from my research on the subject, anyway, it sounds like the Q-Jet is actually quite a good carb, it's just tricky to set up properly. The air valve secondary allows greater flow than butterflies, but is still easy to work with in a daily driver.

I just bought a Edelbrock Q-jet series Carburetor
to go on my 1976 Stingray. These are direct replacement so every thing hooks up as it came off. Mine has the hot air choke application. But they also have the divorced style and the electric
style choke. yours being a 1980 you probally have an electric choke. These are made so you will not have to modify anything.

The thing about these they are new. Any Rochester you find will be rebuilt, the problem with rebuilt is they are not always able to rebuild everything "these are sometimes 25 year old Carburetors an things wear out. I got this one from Jegs.com
for about $468.00 a rebuilt Rochester will run close to 300.00
so I recommend the new one

Steve,
As Alan mention the Edelbrock Quadrajet is an excellent carb. It's 795 cfm, electric choke and a direct bolt on. I've have installed several of them and they work great. I have not seen a brand name rebuilt carb worth installing. Ask Blackdog about the nitemare he went thru.
