have run into a problem and need HELP... I am trying to install the rear stainless steel molding over the rubber weatherstriping. The clips are installed correctly, so is the rubber molding, however when I go to install the trim, the rubber molding seems to be too thick as the SS molding is not getting to the clips on the side. I bought the Rubber molding from Corvette Rubber, and got the cllips from Corvette America.

I am going to try to trim the rubber on the top....and see if the molding will fit. If this does not work, this means the CLIPS that I purchase, must be just a hairline SHORT, and I will have to remove the windows and start all over and repurchase the rubber and clips. Now, my question, am I doing thing right? Are all CLIPs the same or does one vendor offer clips that a better then others? Below are some photos to help you see what I am talking about...PLEASE I need help....

The picture above shows the CORVER SS Molding and the fit....

Again this shows the fit...I am planning to take a dremol tool and trim the weatherstripping that would be under the SS Trim. I think this would allow the SS trim connect to the clips.....

Are all clips the same...do some vendors offer better clips then others? Do vendors make clips that are longer? I got these from Corvette America, anybody else go through this???? HELP

Hello Collin
I just got some more parts on Sunday including some clips for the stainless(gathering parts)
I will ask my friend, but I think 63 has narrower stainless than 64-67, so I think the clips are different. I will find out what I can.
take care
Tom

I would suspect the weatherstrip. None of the after market stuff comes close to the originals. Also make sure the car is in a heated environment to soften up the rubber. Cold W/S is very difficult to work with. Also use a lubricant such as diluted liquid soap to aid in the "squeeze" factor.

YES YES YES, the clips on a 63 are much different then the later years. 63 Clips are a separate breed to all themselves. I just got a new set from Corvette Central, as they had their own made and are slightly longer then the originals (is what I was told, I will let you know when I get them). And you are 100% right about the 63 molding is much thinner.

My plan is this, from all the information I received, I have ordered another set of weather stripping with new molding clips. This time I will SHAVE the weatherstripping done, especially at the corners with the corner sections overlap the side trims. In addition I will trip around the clips to allow less rubber on the clip area that will all the trip to clip on better. Of course we will soften the rubber up with heat.

Once this is finished so is the car :) , for now.

I will keep you informed, most likely I will write an article on it......

Collin,

Been following this thread and will be very interested in what you find works best for the brand of weather stripping and the molding clips. We'll be doing the same job in a while and would appreciate your advices from your experience. Thanks.

Finally finished the rear window install. This is basically what we did. First, buy the clips from CORVETTE CENTRAL. The made their own and are far superior then what other people make or are selling. Second, the rubber weather stripping is way too thick, especially in the center. So what we did was put the stripping on the car and CAREFULLY used a small grinder with 50 grit wheel and ground the top off about 1/8 of inch. Then carefully cut around the actual trim clips to allow the clip to work, tested this with a blade of a screwdriver. In doing so the trim clipped in place, with little to no pressure, and NO LEAKS in the window....I will post photos later.....another problem solved.

Rick, I will be in Enfield not this weekend but next, maybe we can come over and visit for a short while....Collin

Collin,

The pictues look great and the fit of the corners is super. You'll have to give me some tips on the installation when you visit. I just started cleaning all the old goup from the moldings I have in preparation for polishing them. We're a long way from installing them though but I thought I might as well get that job out of the way.

Rich,
