help steering column

[MK86VELA]

I just purchased an 86 vette and the steering column is loose. it seems to be where the steering tilts. I was told that there are 2 screws that just need to be tightened. Does anyone know where i can get a blueprint of sort for dismantling and reassmbling the column. Or do i just need a new one? thanks any info would greatly help.

If you do not feel comfortable taking all the little pieces out of the column...I can give you an address to send the column to...they will rebuild it and send it back the same day...Its not difficult getting the column out.

Thanks . I have the steering wheel puller but not the other one 4 the lock plate.

They have it...you might need to get a bolt that fits into the shaft and grind the head off. This locks the shaft in place while you use the plate tool.

Shaft? Is the corvette column different from the pics? r u talking about the telscoping part of the column? The tool should bolt on to the middle of the column right? And the forks just press down?

Yes I am talking about the telescoping shaft...however when you dismantle the steering wheel and locking lever, the shaft will just move up and down...the tool screws onto the shaft...with the bolt with the shaved head you can lock the shaft in place.

The nicer lock plate compressor has the stud in the middle of the tool.

Otherwise - like was mentioned you need to find somthing to screw into the center of the post to cause it to bind up - so that the tool has something to press against.

I did my 93 using this. Not too bad. I replaced the housing and the pins. I called Tom Reina in S Carolina. This is all he does for a lvivng and had the housing and support GM doesnt carry anymore. The pins were worn, but they are a harder material than the housing, go figure, so it was worn too, which entails the support within the housing,. Tom Reina (864 287 9990)
