I am considering purchasing an exhaust system for my 1992 Convertible. I want to be able to hear a nice sound when I am on the gas but on the Freeway I want to hear the CD player. I have seen the B&B, Corsa, and Magna flow in catalogs but never in person. Any advice would be great.

I have 40 series Flowmasters and you can't hear anything in the car at low speeds due to resonance.

I have the 50 series Flowmasters and they have good sound when you get on it, but are quieter than the 40 series when cruising. I can hear my tunes fine.

I got Dyno Max super turbo LT1 type mufflers and a Dr Gas X crossover to kill any unwanted resonace. This set up works great for me.

grapenutz,

I would be interested in knowing more about the Dr. Gas X crossover pipe. I installed the magnaflows on my car & left the stock resonator in place. I love the sound but maybe a little less resonance would be perfect.

Thanks

I removed the stock resonator and installed the X pipe in its place, It worked out great.

HPG, does your flowmasters have delta flow or are they the original? delta flow is suppose to have a quiet sound from the inside but deep & loud on the outside.

I recommend Corsa's they are quieter than stock on the highway, and scream like hell at WOT. Plus they look really good.

I agree. Love my CORSA!

I think Corsa su-ks!!!

Almost 1G in price, poorly fit !

See my website for pictures of the install problems I had with the Corsa Power Pulse cat back system.
Mine - $800, fits perfectly.

THey were , so I found out later , the wrong Flowmasters for vettes. They are 40 series two chamber stock Flowmasters. They sound great outside, they have a deep sound , inside the resonance to just too much. I guess if I were 20+ again, it would not be a problem.

Resonance

Did it work? Were you able to eliminate the unwanted resonance sound? I have tried various mufflers on my 95 with an auto Trans, but right at that freeway cruzing speed - the resonance inside the car is impossible to deal with!

On a similar car with a 5 speed, just drop a gear, get out of that rpm range and the noise is gone.

Why is this noise even there?

After installing the CORSA cat back system earlier this month, I finally did the dyno run to see what the difference is.

21.6 RWHP and 23.6 lbs-ft of torque

or
327.8 RWHP and 347.9 T on the same dyno.

This is with my LT4+ conversion. Seems to me that the CORSA exhaust does a fine job providing more HP, better sound and good looks.

The whole issue of which exhaust system is the best ends up being very subjective. For a long time, I was trying to deduce by research which system would be best for me. I've come to the conclusion that this approach just doesn't work. There's no way to define specifically how bad a 'drone' is or how nice a revving growl sounds. You could measure db levels, but even that doesn't tell you much... a quieter but really annoying noise is worse than a louder but pleasant one.

So really what you need to do is find someone with a similar arrangement and get them to show it to you. If you dig on the sound, go for it. You need to hear it on the outside, and you need to hear it on the inside on the freeway. If you like it, go with it. But remember the interior resonance on the freeway is what you're going to have to live with for a long time, and that's the drawback. Make sure you can live with it.

In my case, I had pretty much decided on Corsa based on my research. But I still have never actually heard one (beyond their sound clips on their website). The folks around here mostly use Borla... and several have shucked their Corsas in favor of the newer Borla exhausts... and they seemed shocked that I'd want a Corsa over a Borla. They demonstrated the Borlas to me... I liked it. That's what's being installed on my car right now.

To my understanding, Borla has a newer exhaust system they're putting out now which is becoming very popular. Their older one had a ton of resonance and lost some torque for being too wide for a stock engine.

I'd say don't experiment and get an exhaust without hearing it first. Tastes vary so much that it's too likely you won't appreciate the results. Listen to a real one.

Besides.. you know it's so hard to convince a corvette owner to show off his car... *wink* You have to twist arms and stuff... :L

Oh yeah... and as to what makes the resonance so bad in a vette... that curved dome rear window is a hell of a reverberator. Combine that with the small interior space and weight saving thin barriers between the floor and the exhaust... and the vette thrums inside very easily.

This is _GREAT_ for your sound system. A vette can do fine with what would normally be a too small subwoofer because the interior of the car amplifies it so much. The interior of the vette is pretty good for acoustics when you're _trying_ to make sound.

Dont forget about quaility of the product. If you are doing the install yourself its a major issue. If you have pro do it and it dosent fit right out of the box you are talking some extra dough for the install in addition to the cost of the product. As for power gain, from the most to the least a cat back system by itself will add is about a tenth in the quarter.

The easiest way to overcome any resonance or droning in an exhaust system is to turn the rock and roll up? :_rock

Flowmasters do have quite a bit of resonance, I guess it depends on how much of it you can stand. Personally, I like the noise. :D
