Carfax.com. I think there is a small charge for the service. Should be well worth the money spent!!!!!!:D

I bought a 2003 Vert and used the Carfax report. Well worth the 20 bucks. The nice piece was the detailed history. It listed the owners, where it was registered and even when it was inspected, all including the mileage readings to make sure it wasnt rolled back (not really rolled anymore, showing my age). It also shows if has a lemon report on it. In my opinion, when you're spending that much money on a car, it's worth 20 bucks !!

Now that you have the report, keep a paper copy of it with your other car records. If it turns out that there is a problem and it wasn't on the Carfax report, Carfax may reimburse you for the problem. In other words there is a Carfax warranty for the information to be correct. I had it done to my 'vette when I bought the car and kept the carfax with my papers. I wanted to register it with Carfax, but my time limit ran out and Carfax just said keep the paper copy. - R

The Carfax is nice for $20 you can have 30 days to search vins--but don't put all your faith in it. Wife hit car head on with 97 Blazer. Front end back to windshield. $7000 damage. For 5 years it never did show on Carfax. Traded it for another Vette.

Harley1 is right. I was within 1 hour of purchasing a car from a private individual. The
Carfax was clean and the dealership was checking out the car when they found out that the car was fixed (kinda) and it appeared to have a bent frame. I didn't buy the car obviously. I talked with Carfax about this and they said that the information they do have on their report is accurate, but they don't have information if it isn't reported to the authorities. Another interresting aspect is that the car (1999) was originally from Canada and had only 16K miles on it by 2003. I thought it would be a steal since it had so low of miles. I almost got screwed. I think that someone wrecked the car, didin't report it to the authorities, and fixed it themselves with a little help from their buddies. Carfax can't know about these kind of situations. I also don't know how much of Canada's information may be accessable to Carfax. - R
