Silver continues to be the favorite vehicle color and is expected to remain atop the American popularity standings through 2013-14, a Metro Detroit auto color maker said Tuesday.
At the Automotive Color Trend Show in Troy, PPG Industries revealed a study of 66 new shades of vehicle colors it expects to be in style three to four years down the road. The increasingly popular silver led the way among 2010 models for the 10th consecutive year, followed by black and white.
"Silver's been a big trend for a long time," said Mike Millar, manager of strategic marketing at PPG, a leading maker of transportation paint coatings. "And it's the highest we've seen it so far."
Among 2010 models, 31 percent of all U.S. vehicles were painted silver.
The silver category — defined as silver, gray or charcoal — has surged in PPG's studies, growing from 8 percent in 1994 to 20 percent in 2008 and 25 percent last year.
