Question, if i take out the 81 Dist. and replace it with a pre 1980 one and unhook the computer from it will the stock carb still work right? I like the carb and it works fine. I have a bad miss at 1500 rpm and above and the check engine like comes on.:w

Your stock E4ME carb needs input from your ECM so no you can not remove the ECM without changing the carb. :)

Greetings Peter

As Peter said, the carb must have computer input to function properly.

You can pick up a good stock replacement distributor at NAPA for about the same as a non-computer distributor, but have you done the diagnostics to be sure that is the problem? I always hate the "replace random parts till it works" approach; expensive and frustrating. It could be any number of things. I had a Silverado truck years ago start missing badly, but only at highway speeds and hard acceleration. Turned out to be a tiny crack in the distributor cap. I would have hated to have replaced the distributor, coil, ignition module etc before I found out that was the problem.

If you are sure it is the distributor, PM me before you buy a new one, I may have a good one lying around that could be had for cheap.

God bless, Sensei
