So there is this highway exit ramp near my apt. I have been pushing 40 mph threw it easily. Kind of the limit for me.... but, the other day i pushed it to over +45 mph and of course my tires squealed 1/2 way threw the turn. Now i know the "new" limit. I wasn't out of control or anything, but on the edge.

A few things i've notices. I drive with the ASR on. Now, does the ASR only prevent the back wheels from spinning? If true, was the tire scretching i heard the front inside wheel? I sent my tire pressure at 30psi. Should it be higher?

Also, toward the end of the turn when i apply the breaks, I feel a lot of resistance and "rumbling" when i am breaking and turning. The ABS does not go off, but it has that sort of feel. Any ideas?

you are asking to wreck your car. anytime you hear squeeling thru a turn that is side lateral forces pushing the tires side to side and the car is on the edge of loosing control. you shouldn't be hitting the brakes going thru the turn at all. you will loose control! you should be on the brakes on the straight just before the turn, throw the car into the turn nice and smooth and use the throttle to steer your way through it not the brakes. just roll on the throttle coming out. pick your entrance speed for instance i take an exit that is rated at about 25 mph. my entry speed is 45 mph exit speed is 70 mph. once at 45 mph going into the turn i am off the brakes and on the throttle lightly rolling on it. more gas the car will push out less gas the car should nose in. never stab the gas in the turns lightly roll on it till your coming out at WOT.

just be careful i don't want to hear that you wrecked your nice vette!

BTW the ASR will NOT stop the rear tires squeeling. most likely it was your front and rear tires sliding thru the turn.

Well, when activated the ASR closes the throttle to lower engine torque and applies the rear brakes to slow you down when wheel spin is detected. When you accelerate, its almost always the rear wheels spinning that'll make the car get away from you.
As for that exit ramp you mentioned... depending on the grade of the ramp, you should be able to handle it at more than 40-45mph, unless its more than 45 degrees and depending on your approach speed. Anyway, that noise you're hearing probably is your ABS. It will make a bit of noise, so no worries there.
And if you think your tire is scrubbing, check under the hood for tire marks. If not and you still think this is out of the ordinary, have your brake system and your alignment checked.
:w

The type of tires you are running and improper alignment are both important and could contribute to the problems you describe. Also, have your rotors checked for an out-of-round condition. Every road/car/driver has it's limitations...maybe you have reached the limit in one or more categories.

I figured I was at the limit. I know what speed not to go above. I can easily do it at 40-42. Usually have to slow down to merge when there is traffic. I usually let off the gas, I dont slam on my breaks in the middle of the turn or anything, its only towards the end when merging to the road and it becomes straighter. The turn is sort of a cork screw downward turn. Kind of fun turn. Easy to go fast.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice. I won't wreck my Vette, dont worry. :)

JohnnyC,

If you would like to explore the limits of your car in a (relatively) safe environment, get thee to a racetrack. Do an Internet search for track days, and you'll likely find a group putting on events in your area. Instructors are usually available and they can help you work towards that limit safely. And it's a lot of fun!

Haven't you played enough Gran Turismo?:L:L:L They have this old saying for corners and turns: slow in, fast out.

Good Question...

And good answers...

ps. race moto.

I love to turn these ramps too, It gives a thrill.

I always use a rule I learned in motorcycle racing.

as already told brake in throttle out
but I start my turn outside of the road and work it back in.

Left turn I start all the way right and during the turn I am moving the car towards the middle of the road.

and when there is no oncoming traffic you have more road and more speed ;)

And I play a lot of Gran Turismo 4 too :D

Tire Pressure

I sent my tire pressure at 30psi. Should it be higher?

Ok as you said tire pressure 30 PSI that brings up a couple of things one according to the door jamb sticker the preassure should be 35 PSI. Why to prevent cupping of the tires. What are the signs of cupping a rumbling or rough feeling from the tires through the steering wheel. When would this be most noticiable. Under load such as hard cornering. Tire squeel again says the tire pressure is to low or As suggested by others you need to use the throttle during the corner to lift the front end up this will improve the mushy feel of the front. Without throttle the front end droups down or sits on the suspension with throttle the front end rises and the steering becomes lighter and you get less push and more control.:Steer

I think your tire pressure sounds a little low too. What kind of tires are you running?

Going to the track is a lot of fun. I was surprised to mfind that I would really have to work at it and be doing something overly stupid to let the car get away from me enough to encounter a problem I couldn't recover from fairly easily.

The points raised on braking early are on point. Yoiu sure don't want to end up like this dumba$$. Course we know most of these nutballs don't know how to drive anyway. They were the only ones off the track on the day I went. Early and often ;LOL http://www.compfused.com/directlink/922/;LOL;LOL

Oh man, that's nasty! That's exactly why I started going to the track- the fear of doing something like that.

On the street, I run my GS D3's at 31 pounds, and between 36 and 38 pounds on the track.

GS D3's here as well I run em around 35 or a little better all the time, 42 or so on the track. They're wearing very nicely.

Hmmm, I remember the Viper stories differently from the track day ;)

You had a couple of moments as well. But it appeared that you got the hang of everything pretty quick.

What you guys need is to join us next month for our Tail of the Dragon run. 318 sharp curves in an 11 mile stretch of road. It'll turn your knuckles white and the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
