I had a 160 stat in my '96 that started sticking the other day. Had two 3/16" holes in it for air purge and a bit higher flow. The car would heat up on the highway and cool off in town and was generally running at the edge of overheating. Popped out the stat as a test, prob solved.

The cool thing was that the car didn't totally overheat and leave me on the freeway. It looks like the holes provided just enough flow to keep it from going above 240 degrees.

I will definitely be drilling out the next one also.

Just an FYI...

buy a "robertshaw" thermo because if they fail they fail to a open position.

Thats good to know...I was under the impression that the new GM stats were designed to fail open...........

Boy that sure is better than failing closed. Who knows where it might leave you stranded.
