The underside of my hood is the least favorite part of my car. After looking online it would appear that there was some sort of insulation on it which no doubt wore away after many years. I can't seem to find the insulation for an 82. I remember not too long ago that some of the newer cars had nice ones with embroidered vette logos that looked really nice. I also remember someone posting some nice pictures of folks that have had their hood underside painted. It seems to me with the new technology of "wrapping" cars to look painted that there would be a market for this kind of thing. Any ideas how to dress up the underside? I guess when we get around to painting the car it can be painted but until then its just ugly.

The underside of the 1982 hood should have had the duct work for the cold air intake.

Hey Oceangal,

Don't know about 82's insulation, but I had insulation on my 1974, didn't liked it. looked very bad. So I've removed the insulation, you don't really need it anyways.

here's some pictures of before and after. note that not only I've removed the insulation but removed the retainer clips as well, didn't want those nipples to stay under my hood.

Tepot, your ride is BEA-utiful. Have you upgrade your cylinder heads yet?

Thanks Vette79,

No I didn't upgrade my cylinder heads yet, Can't find any second hand ones that are at descent price. I've found a few on E-Bay, but for second hand they charge close to the same price I would pay for New ones. So I might have to wait another year and buy them brand new.

Right now I have new chrome components to add onto the engine, plus I have a line lock to install and then I'll change the rear end ring and pinion. I've already baught some 3:55's from summit racing. they'll go in as soon as snow clears around here.

No insulation?

I Like the clean look under the hood Teapot ....
I have a '75 .. my car looks great except for the insulation under the hood ...
I allways thought that the insulation was to protect the hood paint topside ...
Thanks for the info ...

Hi,

From what I've eared, the insulation was meant for sound insulation, I've eared people talking about paint pealing. But didn't happened with mine and it becomes very hot under that hood.

Some thing to take into consideration is that here in canada we don't get the kind of temperture that people in California would be used to. So i dont know if it would be a concern for places that are very warm in the summer.

But for me, alot of my friend don't have the insulation under the hood and we all have no problem with paint pealing.

BY the Way, your car looks really nice on your avatar, Nice bright shinny red. I love it !!

I'm in Millersville just south of Glen Burnie. Right up the road Dean! Hope to see you around.

Sometime in the past, before I bought it, my '79 developed a leak in the A/C compressor. The leak sprayed up onto the underside of the hood and ate through the insulation before the owner noticed it. It caused the paint on the outside of the hood to bubble. Without the insulation the damage would have been a lot worse. I would definitely keep at least some insulation in that area.:)

I guess it depends on where you live. I know the tempertures in California or other places can be very HOT and could cause a problem. But for me that lives in New-Brunswick Canada where the temperture rarely climbs at 30 degres celcius in the summer. I'm not worried about the car getting too hot to damage my hood.

Replacement insulation is available in the aftermarket if you want to replace the old stuff. Inexpensive, clean and easy to install!

Holy cow that is insane! It shines! Beautiful....just beautiful. The gold is a nice touch.

I don't think the insulation was really for heat or sound as much as it was for fire. If you engine caught on fire the theory was plastic clips would melt and it would fall on engine and put out fire. Atleast that was what I was always told.
