hood won't open

i tryed to open my hood on my 91 and only the left side will release. a coworker gave me a tool he had from a 88 vette he had. he had never used it as the previous owner had gave it to him with the car. i have no idea how to get it to work and can find no one that knows how to get the hood open. any help would be great!

Welcome to I don't know how to use the tool, but someone will come along who does. I think the cables strech out and can be replaced. Have you tried holding the lever with the door open and pulling up on the hood. My right side is a little tough opening sometimes and that's how I have to open it.

If the gizmo you were loaned is that little metal rod that MidAmerica sells to open stuck hoods, AND you have a MidAmerica catalog handy, there is a picture of how it works at about page 96 or so. According to the sketch and description, you open the driver's door and insert the device at/through the hinge area, with the short "prong" pointing down. It looks to me like you try and put the prong where the end of the cable would normally connect to the hood latch. Then you twist the device, holding it at the long "prong" end that looks like it's padded. The hood is then supposed to pop open. If you have a service manual, see if you can find a picture of the hood latch and work with this description.

I did some searches and looked at my car a couple different times. I think Chris has it about right. There is a tab on each side towards the exterior. It lools like you want to get the tool between the tab and the release mechanism, then twist the tool toward the inboard of the vehicle.

It also looks like you could hook it across the cable possibly and either push or pull the cable itself enogh to pop it. Also found this thread. If you can't see these, post up and I'll copy text and pics.

On my '84 I have new cables and still when I open the hood, I have to lift from the passenger's side. If I lift from the driver's side, it makes the hood relatch on the passenger's side.
