How to Install Horn Contact Assembly?

Hello,

Since my ‘69 Vette did not have a horn contact assembly/button (non tilt), I purchased a kit from MADVET… but there were no instructions. I don't have the horn button yet.

There are no wires or anything, so I am not certain if something is missing or how the horn gets powered. I was not able to find specific details in the service, shop, assembly manuals, or Haynes.

How are these parts supposed to be put together? Do I need additional parts?

Thank you.

Fixing the horn was the first thing I did on my Vette. I think I bought the Ecklers contacts assembly but I had the same problem as you - couldn't find a decent print to work with.

Corvette Central have some diagrams on their web site (search under 'horn') but I think what you really need is the shop manual. If you can't find anything else I'll see if I can scan and email the page from mine. Let me know.

No "wires" involved - the "leg" on the contact assembly contacts the spring-loaded brass pin in the hole in the wheel hub when you screw the contact assembly to the hub, then the horn button just snaps onto the contact assembly. If there's nothing down in that hole, you'll need to buy the "brush" assembly and remove the steering wheel to install it.

John,

This has been a evolving project... I keep finding new surprises to keep me busy.

I do have a shop manual, an assembly manual, and the Haynes manual... not much info on the horn assemby.

Thanks,

Ralph

JohnZ,

Thanks for your reply.

The kit came with the contact assemby/bolts - and a stud with a flat end, a spring that is longer than the stud, and a small plastic sleeve.

In what order are these supposed to be put together? None of my manuals have details or drawings.

Thank you.

Ralph

If you'll go to www.corvettefaq.com and click on "Steering" in the left column, a list of articles will come up; find the one titled "Std. Column 1969-75 Steering Wheel & Horn Parts #2", click on it, and an illustration will come up that shows how the pin, spring, and insulating sleeve are installed in the "tower" on the plastic cancelling cam.

John,

Using the illustration on the corvette faq site, I was able to install the horn contact assembly.

Thanks once again.
