I am needing to get more paint for my dark blue metallic '73 vette. I bought a pint that was mixed from a local discount paint store and I just gave them the original paint code (927) to go by. I painted my hinges and they look noticably too light of a shade of blue compared to my chip in the back of my "Corvette ID Numbers" book. I don't have anything to go by as the car is completely stripped. I am not sure if the previous color was original anyway. It was definitely an "Earl Scheib" paint job and coming off pretty badly.

Is it safe to use the book's paint chip to go by or is there a better method to get the correct color?

thanks

The following is the paint used by Chevy for paint code 927/ Dark Blue Metallic:

Fisher WA Number 4282
Ditzler Code 2432
Rinshed Mason A2544
DuPont 5565L

Go to a quality auto paint supplier and request one of the above.

By the way these numbers are on The '73 Spot.

Here are two sources that I've had success in matching my paint colors:

PaintScratch / Bio Pac, Inc.

or

Microfinish LLC
1501 Kuebel St Suite E
Harahan, LA 70123

Both of these companies will work closely with you to get your paint to match. The have online resources and are very helpful over the phone. I can also attest that the quality of these paints are excellent. For aerosol touch-up paint (cans), I like to use Microfinish.

Bingo. A good automotive paint supplier will be able to mix your paint using the codes Tom provided. Remember: the codes are for the original acrylic lacquer.

Thanks for the replies. I think the paint shop I used is where most of the shops in N Austin get their paint from so if they missed the color it wasn't from a lack of experience. I was just curious how most folks obtained their color match for an old style paint... do they just give the guy behind the counter the old paint code and hope for the best ??

I went to a different paint store and the guy there really acted like he would rather try to match it from a part already painted than try to mix it from a code. He also recommended PPG. This first stuff I tried was a cheaper brand called Pro Spray. Maybe that also had something to do with it.

What I would really like to do is find someone in the area that has a dark blue '73 that wouldn't mind meeting me at a paint store somewhere. Heck I'd even drive to San Antonio or someplace ...

thanks

p.s. Tom, your '73 Spot website is really great !! I have checked it out several times in the past. Never saw the paint codes there though. thanks.

here is a shot of the hinge I painted. Obvioulsy I'll have to remove the door again B4 painting the car... working the door to fender gaps right now. I just wanted to paint the hinge before I assembled it. Will probably paint it again.

My local parts store has an optical "gun" that shoots the color. It can then match any color. They guarantee a match. For my red 72 they mixed up some acrylic enamel in a spray can and a pint can. A perfect match for under $30 with plenty of paint for nicks, chips, etc. My red was not quite the same as Mille Miglia......just close. they got it right on the nose.
