Question: How do I make black enamal paint look good?

I had the 89 repainted at Macco, we did all the prep work, and Macco only did the final onyx black. It looks fine, but it doesn't have the base coat/ clear coat look. I can't or should I say I couldn't afford to have a $8000.00 put into a $7000 Vette. It's a great DD, and it worked out pretty nice, I was just wondering if you guys had any tips to use on my black paint. Thank you !
