I am wondering how every one else shifts the 4+3 for normal driveing and how to shift it for max power. I just bought an 85 last friday and so far I have been just going 1 lo, 2 lo, 3 lo, 4 lo, 4 hi, then down shifting in the same way.
is there a better way?

I suggest a search, as this was bantered about on another thread, at length.

Basically, the O/D is for cruising, with clutches that I almost always unloaded before shifting up or down. Kickdowns, were another matter.

I varied how I used it, from a simple overdrive (5th) to 1>2-o>3o>4o. My shift from first was slow to allow an unloaded overdrive engagement when using the second shift pattern. I did this to keep all things in use and hopefully useful for the long term. :w

I usually shift from 1 lo,to 2 hi,3hi,4hi.just my two cents.

It's been many years since I drove a car with a Doug Nash, but back when I was road testing them regularly for magazines, I used the OD switch as an "electric fifth gear".

I always used it as an "electric fifth gear" as well. Never really found a need for it otherwise. ;)
