As old man winter is here those of us with no chokes have to spend sometime getting enough warmth in the intake so our cars will idol and be driveable.
In my case I'm running a Barry Grant Demon on the 502 which has no choke horn at all and has a polished down flow inlet. I have to pump the go pedal about 5-6 times hard, before starting in the cold garage. Then..just a slight push on the pedal to open the throttle plates just enough to act as a choke.
This usually starts the beast and I can get the R's up to around 1500 which is the lowest RPM it'll run before stalling. Then it's quick back out of the garage and hold the 1500 for about 3 min before I can get an idol of about 600.
Then I'm good to go for a cruz. To day I fired her up and rolled out of the garage and stalled. So I re-pumped the pedal...(I think a little to much) and cranked the motor and I heard a big Muffeled BOOM under the hood! She fired off and ran again.
After my run around the neighboorhood I popped the hood and checked around. The boom I heard was a Big time Back Fire thru the carb which went thru the backfire arrestor in the air cleaner and blew the Valve cover breather line off the Air Cleaner.
No harm done...
