There are two screws that hold the ecm in the dash. Best bet is to shine a light up and "eye" the screws. Then go by "feel" and "memory" of the bolts locations. The other option is to remove the seat and lie on your back. I did mine the former way and had no problems. Of course, like everything else on our cars, patience IS a virtue. :)

i don't think that is too possible. i have the carpeted lower panel nearest the door down to take a peak and can see the plugs for the computer but, that's about it.

the helms manual is good for $--T when it comes to this. the diagrams appear to tell me to remove the upper dash panel which is not an option here. i have also looked at the "new" computer and it appears to have two screws (1 each side) that fasten it to the car. it sorta has a notch in it that would make the meer sliding in or out not practical.

nyernga is right. It ain't easy, but that's how to do it. You need a 1/4 drive set with one or two extentions. 11mm if I recall correctly. Good luck, and stay with it, you can do it :beer :w

The ECM is not accessed by removing the (carpetted) knee bolster; rather the plastic trim panel in front of it; the one with the courtesy light in it. The contortions are true, but it's not really hard at all.

Ensure you ground your hands to prevent damaging the chip(s) with static electricity.

thanks for reply. where the hell are the screws for the computer? if they are on the side, i sure as hell can't see or even get to them. i have 1 corner of the lower plastic section down (with the floor light) nearest the door and i can't see $h-t. is the computer held in it's own bracket or something?....thanks!

It'll be easier to completely remove that plastic panel. The two screws are on either side of the ECM and hold it through a black plastic, rather U-shaped bracket. You'll not likely see that, but the silvery screws are near the ends of it, rather close to the metallic ECM body.

Breathe deeply...............relax...........:)

Take the hush panel out or you WILL break it. The screws go straight up toward the top of the dash, or the sky, you might say.

update......

i had already removed the hush panel (plastic cover that holds the floor light) before i started. what threw me is that there appears to be notches and a screw hole on each side of the ecm and accesibility would have been impossible.

i looked up and observed 2 screws in a plastic "case" of sorts. i removed the screws, and popped the case off which turns out to be the locking mechanism (so-to-speak) that holds the ecm in place. after a few hard tugs, the ecm came directly out. what is the worst part about this is that ya don't know what is on the other side of the ecm and ya sure as heck don't want to break any wires, etc.
thanks for the help people!....job done.
