HUD BRIGHTNESS ISSUE ON C5

Lately, it seems as if my HUD is very difficult to see on bright sunny days. Having had the HUD for a few years, I'm aware that there is an auto brightness feature when driving directly into the sun. It seems that it used to get brighter when heading into the sun, but now it appears to stay the same brightness and thus is hard to see. Is this an easy repair aside from having the entire unit replaced? The other question I have is there a way to manually auto brighten. And just in case the question arises, I have a standard windshield and I'm not using polaroid lenses in my sunglasses.

Don't have HUD on the C5 but on my C6 there is a adjustment for the hight of where it is displayed on the windshield. I noticed a difference in brightness when moved from the highest to lowest position. :w

One of the ideosynchrasies with the Heads-Up Display in C5's is that when the sun is at a particular angle to your car (generally over your left shoulder as your driving), you experience a 'blueing out' effect where the display is made unreadable. I'm afraid the only real fix for that is to change direction.

I mean, like, I mean, ya' know .... ya' ain't gonna' crash & burn without input from the HUD.

;LOL

If you said something like that around my old .... God rest his soul .... flight instructor, he'd pull out a bunch of little cards that fit over all of the insturments on the panel and then make you fly around for a few hours by "the seat of your pants" ...... listening to the sounds and looking out the window.

He would also remind you to remember what those sounds ... sounded like ... because you may need them some day.

Now, turn off them fancy elek-troniks ... and drive the damned car! :bash

Actually I think my HUD may be turned off, I sometimes find it an annoying distraction.

Unbelievable:ugh

Ok, maybe I gettin old, but I find all of those fancy numbers right in my face more of a distraction.

I mean, when I am a tiny bit sideways in a corner, I don't feel the need to know exactly how many RPM's are up there. I guess it would be a good read on the accident report though.

;)

And no, I ain't no hot-shot ... for that matter, the other day I was kicking myself in the adz for driving the car like a lazy old lady. Spent all of my time in the twisties (sprinkled with road salt) ... in third gear .. just foot steering like .... I may have well bought an automatic ...

Think about it this way. The HUD allows you to drive as aggressively as you want and recieve critical input from the car without having to lower your eyes to scan the analog gauges.

Our nations best miltary pilots are trained (Red Flag and Top Gun) to use HUD information while still flying by the seat of their pants. Be open to the technology and be better for it.;)

I have found a couple of theories on why the HUD gets dark. One being the light sensors solder connections are "cold" and lose connection causing the HUD to think its dark out all the time. The other is the lights in the HUD are going bad. So far I have not come across anyone that has found a fix for this besides replacing the HUD altogether. Personally I have not found the ambition to take the dash out of the car to get the HUD out and see if I can find a fix.

It took me awhile to get so i'd use the HUD the way it was intended .Now drivin' my second car with it I can say it's very nice to have.

At my age i'm gettin' a little dim.:D

Sorry for the:hijack

Hey Remo, somehow I have a vision of what your HUD looks like :D

I would hate to fall in your sights ;LOL:thumb:thumb

If I am in some "unusual attitude" or near "stall" .... or I need to put a lock on .. the HUD is a wonderful thing.

If I'm in some "unusual attitude" in a C-5 (Galaxy excluded), I'm probably way in over my head.

;squint:

It's an OK toy, I just don't get that warm and fuzzy about it. If I was running the quarter mile ... or worried about my oil temp at Lime Rock or Pocono .... I guess I'd feel more strongly. For every day ops' .. I don't feel the need.

This is the second car I've had with it, 1 Oldsmobile and 1 Vette and I have to say that I like it a lot! Fact is I look for it in cars that don't have it!

I don't have it in my C5....wait...I don't have a C5.:D I will say that I have it in the Bonneville and really like the fact that I don't have to remove my eyes from the windshield to see the info. Now as far as the brightness goes, I haven't had an issue with the one in the Bonneville except for the direction to sun hits it at times, so I can't help with that.
