Hypertech Fan Temperature

Hi! I am considering installing the basic Hypertech chip into my '89 6 spd. to trigger the main fan comming on sooner (this is one of several ideas I am considering to get the fan to come on earlier). Does anyone know the temperature at which the Hypertech chip will cause the fan to come on? Also, does the Hypertech chip snap into place, or is it one of those that you have to VERY delicately place into a carrier and load into the computer to avoid bending the prongs? Finally, are there any adverse side effects of the chip---I like the way the car runs now, and am really not doing this to improve performance, and remember from another vehicle in which I had a Hypertech chip that there were no problems.

Seems a rather expensive way to get the fan(s) on earlier. Can't you get your current chip 'adjusted' cheaper?

You can also buy a switch from Mid American or Ecklers that turns them on at like 180 or so.

Or you can buy a simple SPST switch and some wire to trip the fan relay manually. OR, turn on the A/C. You probably are quite familiar with that switch in HOU.

I just hot wired my fan to come on when the engine is started.
Engine runs at around 180 deg most of the time.

Thanks, everyone. I've been investigating this for awhile. The problem with all the aftermarket switches is that the ECM controls the main fan, and the switches control the auxiliary fans (the previous owner has a 185 degree switch that turns on the auxiliary fan at this temperature). Also, the most the aftermarket switch kits can do is have you re-wire things so both fans come on at the same time---the auxiliary fan on '89s makes a real racket, and the main fan is FAR more efficient. So, to have the main fan come on earlier you either have to "chip" the ECM or rewire things to effectively have the ECM control the auxiliary fan and the aftermarket switches control the main fan. I found a thread on doing this, but would prefer to leave re-wiring alone. I have checked the chip companies, and FastChip are very pleasant and helpful, but I really don't want to tinker with how the car runs now (runs great), so the Hypertech "lower" ECM activation of the fan and no change except at Wide Open Throttle is what I am thinking about now, and replacing the 185 degree switch for the auxiliary fan with the standard factory switch.
