86 coupe where does this get installed into and do they really work

It gets installed in the ECU, which is behind the breadloaf on the passenger side. You get to it from underneath by removing the carpeted panel. The ECU is a tan plastic frame around a metal box held in place by two bolts. There's a cover on the ECU (two phillips screws) and the chip goes under that cover. It's a similar connection to a hard drive in your computer.

That said, I think most of these chips are almost worthless - esp. in the older cars. I'll have an ADS SuperChip upgrade prom out of my 86 soon that you're welcome to have for free if you've got a 4+3. I'm waiting for a custom setup to arrive.

I can actually show you the difference between my stock prom and the ADS one...

man that would be great..dinner is on me next time im in MD..send me a note when u get the new one

thanks again

I have a hyper tech in my 88.. and I LOVE IT~
One of my best low buck HP boosters.

The only difference I noticed in a friends (90 auto) is that it has a little more pull in 2nd gear. It no longer felt like it was out of breath. Other then that I noticed no difference.

Best gain is a custom burned chip that takes all of your modifications into account. What the Hypertech basically is taking a human brain and sticking it in different bodies. There is no way that will work with all human bodies because they're all different. Same thing with your car and mods, it's all different.

I recommend you buy something else if you want power. Custom chips wouldnt be worth the expense on a stock motor either, so thats out.

Headers, exhaust, intake mods is what you need to do.

is it possable to change or should i say re-burn some thing on a custom chip? the one i have know is makeing my coolant fan come on at 170, and not sure when it goes off since the temp never goes below 165. its just to cold a temp for this area. MD.
Thanks

What are you asking? If the fan setting is controlled by the Chip?

Assuming no one has wired the fan to stay on, yes it is. Its supposed to be at 228F in 86. If yours comes on at 170, that is just too low. Mine is programmed at 195 and off at 175, and the aux fan comes on at 188F per my wiring.

its not wired for on all the time. when the engines cold its not on until the temp reaches 170. so should i just get a stock chip or have this one changed

i've had a hypertech in my vette for about two years, fan on at 175 and off at 160. I did notice it run smoother at 160ish then I did when the coolant was at well over 220.

right now my coolant fan comes one at 170 and i have never seen the temp go below that during driving so i don't know what temp its set at to shut off. to me 170 is to cold and not burning fuel as it should be, but who knows:?

But to me 170 is to cold and not burning fuel as it should be, but who knows and i don't want to open a can of worms here. just want to change my chip to a diff temp.

Hypertech makes 2 versions of chips that turn the fan on and off at different temps. One has it come on at 176 and off at 160 or so. I think the other one has it come on at 200 and off at around 180. Either way, you need the cooresponding thermostat to match whichever chip you get. Just my $.02.

P.S. There is a LOT of contraversy about running a 160 or 180. There was a poll on this subject and the 180 won. But if you look in a TPiS catalog, they suggest a 160. I tend to side with them if for no other reason than that they produce some awfully good stuff, and seem to know how to make power.
But I also think you need other mods, like headers, free flowing cats and mufflers, to mention a few. Ported heads, larger manifold base and runners, or their mini-ram will get you there quicker too, at a pretty high cost. I'm saving my $ for ALL that good stuff.

so dose any one know of a place that can re-burn my chip to change the coolant fans coming on at a diff temp? i don't really want to go back to stock either??

If you've got an off-the-shelf chip, it most likely cannot be re-burned. If you have a custome one, then it usually can. Did you ever pull the ECU to see what you had?

i was thinking about pulling it out on friday, but got to get a alignment done . so if the wether holds up this weekend i'll get to it. that lower hush panel always kicks my ass!
