1987Silvervette

Guest
1st off I would like to say hello, I am new to yalls fourm. I am a very proud owner of a 1987 Vette Coupe. I am a audio guru, so any stereo ?s I will be happy to help. But when it comes to these "electronic motors" I am not to swift and that is why i need yalls help.!!!!!!

I bought the car not long after selling my 77 vette and about 2 weeks after having it. . . . well i spun a rod. So i did what any respectable vette owner would do with 100000 thousand miles. I had the engine rebuilt by a local very reputable buildier. I had a new timing system, boarded 30 over (355) and hotter cam and refaced crank. well when putting the motor back in a few sensors got broke but i replaced them as they broke. to make a long storie short while trying to start it for the 1st time i got a little crazy with the starting fluid and cought the MAS on fire and i replaced it. but it will not idle for nothing so i started a process of elemination. i replaced plugs wires cap and rotor. and that helped along with the MAS. and that helped a good bit. it is running fine at higher RPMS but it will not idle for anything, and i took it for a little spin around the block and came home and the passanger exhaust manifold was cherry red, also i am getting a little backfire when i let off the gas and sometimes when i press the acelerator. but now it wont even start .

I put the code checker on it and it gave me a

blink (pause) blink blink blink blink blink

if any ove you can help please do so, i am a sever vette addict and i havent drivin in over a month :(

thanks David

Can't help you with much of it David, but "blink (pause) blink blink blink blink blink" is what you get for Code 15 - coolant sensor circuit. But that sounds like only part of your problem.

I'm not thinking straight right now, so I'm not even going to attempt to diagnose any of the other symptoms. Someone else will be along shortly. :CAC

Gee, another audiophile. We should talk (or listen)! :)

The .030 over should not be a huge deal but the 'hotter cam' might be, depending upon how hot. The drop in MAP from increased overlap, caused lower manifold pressure, which tells the ECM (comupter) that the throttle is open more and therefore the engine needs more fuel. Many modified engines run too rich as a result, until the chip in the ECM is reprogrammed.

I think you have more going on, too. The Code 15 (low temperature indicated) is as Ken stated, but the '87 manual calls for a SCAN tool's reading in the first step on the troubleshooting flowchart. It refers to -47F for 3 seconds, which I heartily doubt you are seeing in the 'swamp'. :D

The coolant temperature sensor may be bad or there might be an open in the circuit, for starters.

If you intend to do much work on the car, as many of us do, get a factory manual from Helm and get familiar with it. You'll also need some basic tools, like a digital multimeter to take voltages w/o frying the sensitive electronics. These cars still have engines and the basics still aply. This big difference is the electronic control, which more precisely does what the old stuff did. Issues with the wires can be frustrating to find, whether it is shorts, opens or RF interference. :w <<the wave

I am starting to think that it is "EGR", i dont know why i am thinking that, it is just a gut instinct. from the problems and the symptoms some are describing, i am having somewhat the same problems. would it be "practical" to replace it and see where i go from there?????

I am not one that will go out and buy parts at will and see if that fixes it. If I were you I would get a service manual and try to track down the problem so you are not wasting money buying useless parts. With the service manuals you can do most any repair work outside of major engine or tranny work.
