I took my 98 in for the Column Lock Recall today, and though that seems to be working, the service guy scratched my dashboard on the side and for some reason the ignition lock is loose in the dashboard. Now I get to fix it because they say it wasn't anything they touched.:mad

I knew it wasn't going to be a good experience!

Bunch of bastaches..thats why I dread taking my Vette in to those aholes...sory for your misery...:mad

great dealer service....

I would change my transmission, replace my a/c and repaint my OWN new vert before letting it out of my sight at Mr. Chevy's store. sorry for your experience..... i've learned the hard way in the past.

I just took my dashboard and console apart, and there is really nothing I can do about the switch being loose. it's just held in place by the console pressure against the cover. Oh well....

I have an '04 and my switch is also loose. I think all of them are sorta loose...I checked other '04s and they are loose also...;shrug

Loose ? What's Loose?

Splain that to me I checked my '04 and the ignition ain't loose. They fixed the other column thing when thay put it together. Notice I didn't say "built it."

04 T Red... No dont have one.

Hey Bobby baby...you don't have an ignition switch built into your dash?...the little round thingy with the keyhole in it that you stick the key in and turn clockwise to start the car?...Is your ignition switch on the steering column?...or do you just rub 2 wires under the dash together?.....:L

ok... stick the key in and don't turn it but move it gently side to side and you will see the black plastic insert around the metal keyhole move a little in the dash...thats what he meant by "loose"...and its normal...:beer

Sory but all of them have a little play in them...unless you glued yours tight...thats what he was talking about when he said "loose"...:w

Yeah, that's what I meant by loose. But it wasn't loose when I took the car in, and it hasn't been loose since I owned the car. It wiggles up and down about 1/8" now.

I can see where the panel is pried out to get the adjoining dash panel out, and I'm sure that is what happened. When I pulled the console, I tried to think of some way to anchor the disk to the back of the panel. Like double sided tape or something. Probably not worth the trouble of pulling the console off again.
Mr. Badwrench ain't touching my baby again!:mad

Hi wishuwerehere82 -

Ouch...Sounds like the "tech" was using some shortcuts. sorry to hear about your bad experience.

I am thankfull to have a great local dealer service department. The service manager drives a Z06....

best regards -

Tell them to fix or replace the parts they damaged or you will call and write a letter to GM/Chevrolet to file a complaint. If they don't fix it call GM and send a letter with a copy of your paperwork from the recall repair.

They rush through the recall repairs because they don't get paid that much. Too bad for them. They shouldn't take it out on your car.

I brought my car in for a minor problem and (totally unrelated) they changed the battery because they said it went dead and would not take a charge (I never had a battery problem before I brought it in). They scratched a plastic panel on the side of the fuse box when they installed the battery. I asked them to get me a new panel and they did. It wasn't that noticible but it was a matter of principle. A Corvette is a high quality car it deserves high quality service. BTW, the mechanic that did my work no longer works for that dealer. I guess I wasn't the only one to complain about him.

Don't let them push you around.

Whats the deal with the column lock, does it really need to be fixed? because Im so scared to bring my baby in to them, that Im not going to have it done. I ll let the next guy who someday owns it, bring it in. Is this a mistake? is the recall a precaution? cause it happened to a few cars, and what happened? thanks guys.

I haven't heard of any crashes due to the column lock problem but many people have had their car not start and had to be towed to the dealer. I have a 6 Speed manual so all they did was reprogram it.

You could put in a column lock bypass kit in your C5 by yourself. http://www.ls2howto.com/index.php?article=24
