Here is the deal....

Was backing out of the parking lot at work and my car dies (1984 Corvette), try to start it again and it fires right up, confused, I drive away. Shut the car off at the Gas station to fill it up....fires right up after filling up. Go to my buddies house, car sits for a couple hours, try to start it up.....nothing, like it's out of gas.

So.....I call my friend who helps me with my auto repairs and he checks the fuel line all the way to the injectors (2 under the air cleaner) and it's getting fuel right into the injectors but NOTHING comes out of the injectors. What gives???? I thought it was weird that they both went out at the same time, but I know nothing about fuel injection. Please help me out.....just post anything, I need some reassurrance that all can be well.....

Some more info:

Car almost dies when I hammer it.....kinda like it was getting flooded.

Fuel pump relay

And or fuel pump.

The relay is located ( on an 84 ) next to the wiper motor.

Open the gas door... remove the gas cap... have somebody else turn the key on...
( DONT SMOKE ). Do not start the car!

Do you hear the pump whining
(for 2 seconds)

If yes, when the car dies... try this test again

If the pump doesn't spin... jump a HOT wire to the ALDL connector ( where your right knee is under the dash to pin G left side lower)

If the pump NOW spins & you get fuel...I'll bet it's the relay!

There are other issues here...like
How many miles on the car?
Have you ever changed the fuel filter?
What condition is the pickup sock in front of the fuel pump... is it clogging itself?

Did you know the pump was in the tank?

I would pull the connectors

At the top of the injectors and clean ( re tweek ) the connectors for GOOD seating!

We actually pulled the connectors and cleaned them.....i was told it may be a computer problem. Does that make sense?

It might!

Betting bad ground strap or connection from ECM to injectors!

Did you look to see if you have any codes?

I know this is a great site and all...but I think you need to go join this site and look at the TECH, FAQs, and search the boards.

In addition to Vig's suggestions...

You may have an ignition problem. The injectors are triggered from the ignition pick-up coil, it's not uncommon for the pick-up to fail, causing the injectors not to spray.

Although anything's possible, it doesn't sound like the ECM, especially if BOTH injectors are not spraying. It's unlikely that both injector drivers would fail, especially since they are fused independently.

I would also recommend checking out the CFI forum as JohnM suggests (also not to take away from the awesome knowledge of the :CAC)

Good luck,

Bill

CFI Problems

I had this problem on my 84.

found that the three wire connector on the distributor had come loose. Reseated the connector and it started right up.

Sounds simple, but it's worth a check.
