...please tell me if what I have done is wrong. While I was installing a new air duct in my Vette, I notice the MAF's screen was retained by a wire. Using a flat screwdriver I removed it. I was telling myself "they charge $300+ for a new screenless MAF and it took me 30 seconds"

I took some pictures and I have not start the car yet. If this is wrong, please tell me before I have to go and expend the $300 for a new one.

I also eliminated the TB bypass

No, I don't think so. There are a lot of people that take off the screens. Mad-Mic has done it. I don't think you will harm anything.

Be careful if you have a K& N air filter ! Do not over oil the filter when you clean it ,
as it has taken out several of our site members sensors. Not mine ! thanks to all the great people out there who have advise that they share!

I hope you didn't use that "smooth" intake runner that ecklers sells. If you did, go out to the garbage and get the original ribbed one. The smooth one won't withstand the heat and splits down the center giving you a code 36.

Wow, No I did not throw them. Are they going to melt?

Never throw anything away on a vet it is alway's worth money.

The retaining ring will take you forever to find in the chevy book.
The removing of the screen will cause a voltage spike that at times you can feel when the car is at idle.
Unless you intend to race the car I would leave it alone.
I left the screens in my 86.
My 94 Lt1 I installed the granatelli nitrous MAF but it only increases the fuel by lying to the computer by saying the air flow is greater than what is comming through the MAF.
ON my Lt1 I have installed the claw, maf, coolent by pass, ported the throttle body to what I wanted and the thing in the center of the throttle body .
I can't think of it but everyone say's it does not work.
I never believe anyone and do my own tests.
At 104 mph it all works and will increase power above 104 mph.
The total horse power with nitrous is a grand total of 35 hp.
Also removing the screen will lose you .10 in the 1/4 mile on a cold day ,hot day you will not lose any time in the 1/4.
All tests were done at sea level.
Just my 02 worth.

The smooth ones will melt. And that part is called an air foil. About the only thing it foils is your wallet.

I have a granetelli MAF as well; on top of a TB airfoil and open lid with K&N.

The big gain from all this is the open lid.
The airfoil is good for 1-2 HP.
The screenless stock MAF is good for about 4 HP (assuming you have the open lid and K&N already.)
The K&N is worth a couple HP too....

If you do all of the above, you are going to need some sort of exhaust mod to really take advantage of the extra air flow.

I (unfortunatly) think the 'smooth' intake tubes are not worth the $$, and probably don't add any power... if they do, figure 2-4 HP. The only time I have seen the need for new intake ducting is when the engine can suck so much air it can collapse the factory ones...

If I had the choice of any of the above mods, the open lid tops the list by far:) --and it is the cheapest if you just cut your factory lid!--

Thanks for the input, The airfoil and the open lid with K&N filter came with the Vette upon the purchase. I did buy the lean air ducts and I just e-mail ecklers telling me that once they melt I'll expect my money back. On the MAF screen, I'll drive the Vette without it and if it gives me trouble/code I'll put it back where it came from.

Thanks for the help:beer

Good weekend!!!

I took the screens off the MAF on my 86 three years ago. 10k miles later and no problems. If you buy TPIS's engine secrets book, they explain how to do this instead of spending $300 on a de-screened one...

Isn't that thing like $70?

Indeed it is. And you'll get more HP gain from the side mirror wind deflectors then you will that "power coupler" ;LOL

Actually, according to the experts, the brightly colored stickers achieve more hp than anything else.:L

The pictures in your original post show a stock lid, not an open lid though :confused
