And I noticed that most of the old cars with TPI engines in them had a square air filter in the front of them instead of the long black filter we have on our cars. I was wondering if there would be any way I could do this on my 86? Thanks!

Those square filters are used as most of the conversions do not have room for the over the radiator ducting. The over the radiator ducting is much better as it delivers cooler air to the engine. The square filters attached directly to the engine just suck in hot engine compartment air.
