Hi!

I'm a '89 C4 owner in Hungary and I've manage to break my only ignition key, so i have to oreder a replacement key from the USA. As i know the built in anti theft system (immobiliser) recognises the key from the resistance of the pellet, and there are 15 different standard resistances. I've measeured this resistance: 2,36 kOhms. Can anybody tell me what is the ID# of this key? There isn't any official GM shop around here with the proper tool to identify my key. :( Thanks for the help in advance:

Gábor Kovács

Do you know anyone here in the states you could mail the key to? They could bring the key to the dealer so they could use the Vats Interrogator on it, then mail it back to you. You can defeat the VATS system very easily.

http://www.asttraining.com/Files/vats1.pdf

There is also a resistence chart

The Vats chart

Key Code Resistance Acceptable Range

1 402 386 - 438
2 523 502 - 564
3 681 650 - 728
4 887 850 - 942
5 1130 1085 - 1195
6 1470 1411 - 1549
7 1870 1795 - 1965
8 2370 2275 - 2485
9 3010 2890 - 3150
10 3740 3590 - 3910
11 4750 4560 - 4960
12 6040 5798 - 6302
13 7500 7200 - 7820
14 9530 9149 - 9931
15 11800 11328 - 12292

And on Jon's PDF page the 2nd silver bullet about temping in a fixed resistor has saved ALOT of Vette owners the pain & suffering of ( in my opinion ) a pretty lame anti theft system.

Good Luck

Damn vig, U r quick with the info. I was off looking for the key code values. When I got back u had already posted them. U have the info and u must have it well organized. If U get to Europe lets take a run together. I like the way U do things. Let’s all drink to the vigman.:bar

KQS when you get ur key code you can get the key here http://www.arton.nl Talk to Patrick. He and his dad are great folks. They love Vttes, know what they are talking about and do not rip U off. U can have it in downtown Magyar in 24 hours.

Man do I miss Budapest. I had typed up a funny story about my time in Budapest but my wife looked over my shoulder and pushed the delete button. I am sure it had something to do with the beauty of the Hungarian women.

Next time you are in Nancsi Néni or Gundel´s tell them I said Hi.

Thanks to all of you for the quick and useful info. It seems i have to get a #8 ignition key.

SpanishVettes: I'll try to contact to Patrick. I have a friend in the USA, usually i ask him to get and to post stuffs here, but this way is damn sloooow, usually takes 4-5 weeks to receive a packet (with USPS 4-7 days air mail delivery!!!). I think this dutch shop have to be must faster. If they have reasonable prices, i'll give them a try. The hungarian part dealers usually apply a 2x or 2,5x multipier on every part, ie. they ask 430 USD for a MAF sensor or 350 for a radiator.

Thanks again to everybody!

Gábor

If there were no:CAC
I could not maintain a Vette in Europe. All of the folks here at CAC are great.
Patrick at Arton has used parts as well. The last time I was in his shop you could have built several C4´s out of his ¨used¨ bin. He sold me a door window for 100. €, GM Europe’s price is 285. €

Welcome to the EEC. Let’s start the free movement of goods and people now! I will send you a señorita with a Corvette Key. You send me a Tooth Erika with a bottle of Egar wine.
Hello
:cu

Hmmm....Door windows....My car was robbed out 2 times in 2002 so i had to buy 2 door windows....First time i was lucky, a guy sold me a salvaged one for 40 EUR, but next time i had to buy a new.. That was a spanish StarGlass type Corvette C4 door window, and it costed me 100 EUR in Hungary! I think you should check this StarGlass company next time in Spain.

Sending Erika is a little more difficult task....

Bye:

Could you please send me a contact # or e-mail for StarGlass.

I have searched spain and found no such company. None of the independent auto-glass people have any information either.

Hungary is 25 years ahead of Spain. When the wall came down you guys made a mad dash forward. The Spanish are waiting for Franco’s return.

When I lived in Buda My Landcruiser was broken into. The Auto glass company came to my office and replaced the glass within 2 hours. The same Landcruiser was broken into here in Spain. It took Toyota Spain 6 weeks to get the glass, when they got it, it was the wrong tint.

GM Spain does not even stock items like the brake light bulbs.

I have been in Europe since 1986. Every country has moved forward except Spain, which is marching backwards as quickly as possible. This is why everything I own in Spain is for sale. http://www.SPEED-KARTS.com If anybody is interested, I will even finance the deal.

So Gabor

Are you going to wait for the new key... or just substitute the resistor in the meantime?

Another thought..

Did the key itself break?

Or did the pellet just fall out?

Vig!

Well, they key itself has broken, half of it's still in the lock...so i can turn on the igniton, but sometimes if i put the other half of the key into the lock, the immobiliser isn't recognise it... I'll install a resistor until my new key(s) arrive...btw, i can't use my car right now here, there's about 40-50 cm of snow and -10, -15 C out there...Ideal weather to complete minor repairs on the car in a heated garage :).

Spanishvetts: There's a stamp on my door window glass showing it's a StarGlass window, and the shop-assistant told me the origin of this window glass is Spain. I'll ask them about this StarGlass company next Monday - maybe the shop-assistant was wrong.

Great Information!

I measured my key and it was 7439 ohms.... a little off but I will guess a #13!

I think www.madirect.com offers a plug in bypass module. I think I am going to install one of those.

Thanks!

That's only 0.8% off from the perfect ohm reading for #13. That's actually pretty accurate for a resistor. Considering your average resistor is +/- 5% to 10%.

The Corvette key pellets would seem to be +/- 1% rated resistors.

At the weekend i've managed to by-pass the anti theft module. I used an adjustable resistor (trimmer, range: 0-3,3k) so i didn't have to combine the right value from different resistors. I set the resistance exactly to 2,37 kOhms at +20C, and it still worked at -20C too. I recommend all of the usege of an adjustable resistor, it's much simplier to setup.

Well done! That is the kind of thinking we need.
¿did you use a precision resistor or just a regular potentiometer?

I am missing Budapest today. It is cold here for a change and our houses are not built for it. It is +2º but feels like -20º If I were you I would go for a drive up to Balaton have lunch by the lake and get the car back in the garage tonight just in time to catch some music at Pilaf’s. :Steer

By the way, since you guys invented the Telephone switch-board maybe you can tell me why you say ¨hello when you walk OUT of the door and ¨see you¨ when you hang up the phone?
:duh
