1962 Corvette Red
I have a perplexing ignition problem. Sometimes usually after engine hot, but not always, you turn ignition and get nothing. Engine does not turn over at all. You can hear a "boing" in the dash when you turn key but that may be the gauges going on and off. I have replaced both neutral safety switch and ignition switch in last week but still have intermittant problem. Funny thing is if you hit the underside of the steering column or move the telescopicing steering wheel in and out while holding key in start, it will start. Local mechanic is puzzled to. I can't think of what could be in the steering column which could cause the problem. Ideas? Suggestions? Going to take to a car electric repair shop next week but curious if anyone has ideas.:ohnoes

Ok.
I'm a little confused on this one.
Your data says "1962 Corvette Red" but no 62 has a telescoping column.

I'll add that, if the telescoping column is one that also is like those in 68-96 Vettes where the ign. swtich is on the column, you have an intermittant short or open in the column wiring or connectors.

1. 68 Corvette didn't have the ignition switch in the column!!:thumb It was in the dash!!:thumb

2. If this is a C3 form 69-82,you have................

A. Improper Adjusted Ignition Switch!
B. Bad Ignition Switch!
C. Bent Actuator Rod!
D. Worn Actuator Rack Assembly!

PS 84-96 are basically the same!!

Sorry I forgot to specify. I lost the 62 in Hurricane Katrina. I bought a 1969 after storm to replace 62, as 1969 had A/C. 1969 has telescoping and tilt steering wheel. Ignition switch on top of column and replaced two days ago, a week ago replace neutral safety switch (which had bypassed apparently before I purchased, which I corrected so previous owner had same problem). The only wiring I can see in column is primarily turn signal and horn.

That diagram in my post is 1969 Tilt Telescopic column from 1969 service manual!! (Click on it!!):thumb

#60 Ignition Switch! (Above your toes on column under dash,2 mounting screws with slide mount!)
#37 Ignition Rack! (In column collar, behind Ignition Key Tumbler!!)
#38 Ignition Rod! (Attachés to Ignition Rack and runs down to Ignition Switch to activate!)

Thanks but I can't see where you can buy #37 or #38 at ecklers or zip etc. I will keep looking. Understand how the rod works not sure that's the problem bec of what's happening very intermittant problem 1 in 5 starts. If you move the telescoping steering wheel in and out that sometimes will let it start or striking steering wheel underneath while holding in start works but not always. Then if let it sit for a while it will start. Possibly rod or rack sticking (gummed up with gunk of 38 years) Do you think if I sprayed inside with WD-40 or Corrosion X that would help or would it hurt something?
