Hi,

The ignition switch in my 74 is causing me problems. The Other day the ignition stayed ON even with the key out !!. so it burned a bit of the starter, Then burned the gound wire at the battery. There was no way to stop the darn thing !!!

Today I went and baught a brand new ignition switch, Ground wire and this time I've baught a Battery Quick Disconnect Switch. There's no way i'm gonna let this happend again.

So tonight i'll change the ground cable . should take no longer than 10 minutes. But for the ignition switch. I do not have any idea where to start?

Anybody can help me with replacing the ignition switch? any diagrams or pictures?

The AIM has a pretty good descriptioin of hoe to install the switch. The parts book has a good breakdown of the way all the parts go together. Getting the switch out is a different matter. You will have to pull the steering wheel, if tit is a tele\tilt, you will also have to pull the tele parts. There is a hole that runs parallel to the steering shaft and goes to the side of the switch. Look at the new switch, there is square button on it, thats what you have to push on the old one to get the thing out. I just replaced one in my 75, not too big a deal, but I needed help getting the clip back on the hardware for the tele/tilt. I will see if I have some pics of it.

The procedure for removal of the ignition switch (the one mounted on top of the steering column, buried inside the pedal support) is covered in Section 9 (steering) in the Chassis Service Manual. :)

may help

Hi Teapot after you fit ground cable and new switch, check another two items, when a situation like this happens , take the key out and it still runs, it can also mean, that 1, the regulater can get spicked and over charge the system from the alternator, so make sure your all connections at alternator are tight, or you may have a faulty regulator or alternator, regards wayne.

will try again

Hi Teapot,, sorry i may have put you wrong i just remember now, it was a old 63 or 64 buick i had it did the same took the key out, and would not turn off, it was a faulty generator the type that has approx 5 or 6 Diodes inside, they or some had worn out, that was the cause, so i dont think an alternater on the vette is the same not sure, so thought i better clarify that regards wayne.

thanks for the warning Wayne.

I've repaired the Ground cable, put a new one and I've installed a quick disconnect switch at the battery. So no more Burning wires I hope. I will try to swap the ignition switch sometime this weekend.
