I need to remove the clock (Quartz Update) and replace the ammeter (defective or wiring problem) on my 76. I have an assembly instruction manual, but it seems that the only diagram missing is the one for removing the guages panel in the center.

I would greatly appreciate any information on where to find instructions or any information on the procedure for removing the panel from the center of the dash in order to access the gauges for removel.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Tony,

On the 77, I simply take out the screws on each side and the top of the gauge cluster, remove the drive shaft tunnel covers and then remove the two screws underneath that attaches the gauge cluster to the center console, tilt the gauge cluster forward, unclip the wiring harness and pull it out.

It was also mentioned to me by a Corvette parter to make sure you disconnect the positive lead first when removing and connect the negative lead first when installing otherwise it is very easy to short out the entire circut board.

FB, I understand the logic of your procedure when working on an electral component like the instrument cluster but I would recomend a different process.

When evey you work on anything that has electricty in it or near by remove the negative side of the battery. That is it--- be safe and make it simple. No power no problem. Only one thing to remenber on the battery remove neagtive first, put on last.

It is just too easy to screw up with power on the car. Sometimes you need power on to trouble shoot a problem but again I would do all the mechanical type work with power off then turn it on to trouble shoot the electral problem then turn off for re-assembly.

You have to remove the whole guage cluster and then remove the backing to it and then remove the guage you want.
