Hello everybody,

Very simple question. I want to make my own lockup wiring for me 700R4. I already have all the parts except for the wiring. Should I use special wiring because the wiring is in contact with the transmission oil (cold an hot) or are all the normal automobile single core wires capable of doing the job?

Greetings Peter

I have a 200r4 in my 81 and rewired the trans lockup system. Transmission fluid is a poor conducter of electricity. The new aftermarket lockup soleniod I bougt looks like standard automotive wire. I converted my trany to a 1 wire system powered through the brake pedal switch. I used a normally open preasure switch from a th400 tranny. When in overdrive the switch closes at about 45mph and the lockup engages. Disengages when the brake is applied. This settup works ok for me because I only shift to 4th gear when on the free way

I would think that you slightly misworded your message: surely "normal" automotive wire is not "single core" [=solid wire] but "multi strands" .

Apart from that, the copper is of course not important, but the insulation is.
Again, I would think that the standard automotive wires are insulated with a vinyl cover, and that should be withstanding the enviroment in the transmission.
Rubber does not, I guess ;)
