intake & distributor removal 101

Nope. If the motor won't turn over you have an ignition switch/starter problem. How do all the fuses look in the fuse panel?

Dave

They all look good...I'm kinda stumped. Maybe there is a loose ground somewhere? If I understand correctly, this would have nothing to do with the distributor since the process of starting a car and providing spark are not related...is that right?

Even if you have/had a distributor problem the car should at least crank.

Dave

Dude :(

Post an ad in here and see if anyone lives near you that can help you out.

Just a suggestion, that you actually brought up BURGLAR, maybe he shorted the starter. I don't understand, though, why then engine would even turn over if the distributor rotor isn't in line with everything. Can somebody give me an explanation?

Good luck with finding your problem, tony. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

I sent you a PM

With my phone I will do my best to help out this thread is driving me nuts lol.

Thanks for the offer Dream Driver! I actually had a mechanic over today to see if he could figure things out for me...se my other thread "won't start"...he was able to figure out that the starter is not getting voltage. He could only stay for a few minutes, but he'll be coming back in a few days...I think I may finish some other 'vette projects in the meantime...
But for now, I'll just post a few pics of how my project went...

Here is what started the whole thing. This pic shows the rubber seal which was the cause of my oil leak. Looks like there was some silicon under the rubber seal and a tiny bit on top...

Looking at Burglars pics from his intake manifold project, I knew that this looked good. I already cleaned up the mating surfaces for the intake with acetone and scraped off the remaining gasket crud.

looks great!

Nice job Tony! looks very clean I am sure you'll have no more leaks. Sounds like you are on the right track to getting your ignition problem solved. Sounds like my luck. Working on repairing one problem and another unrelated one pops up. My starter was giving me fits shortly after I replaced my battery several years ago. installed a new starter and all was well there after.

Dave

I found this under the intake. It doesn't look factory & probably didn't add much horsepower...if any. I decided to uninstall and remove it. Does anybody know what kinda mod this is?

I've seen this before. That's one of those Gremlins that you hear people complaining about. They lurk around in your engine, waiting for when you least can afford a repair, and then they bend something, or in your case, sneeze and blow an intake gasket on you. They're usually quite vicious and you should show extreme care when working around one. The only way to get rid of them (at least temporarily) is to throw monstrous amounts of cash at them. Usually paper money, nothing less than a $20. Keep throwing the money at it until it runs away. May require a second mortgage on the house.:L

Okay Everyone is wrong lol

Do it whatever way you see fit. And good luck.

and now to finish this thread off..

The following 2 pics show the old seal between the intake & the engine...

gaskets

I got the intake gaskets from Paragon since they have the most "correct" gaskets available...cost me around $20...notice the semicircular tab between the cylinder runner & exhaust heat cross-over...

gaskets w/ High Tack & RTV

Close up of gasket coated w/ Permatex High Tack gasket sealant (both sides) & Permatex Ultra Black around the water passage...

last two pics

RTV along the edges...
looks kinda sloppy but it works...

the end...

last pic...
After I put the intake back on, I waited 24 hrs before I torqued the bolts down...
Some of the RTV that oozed out the edges was still a little soft...I didn't start the car for a few days after 'cuz of my "no start" problem...by then the RTV was pretty firm.
I'm happy to report that so far I've had no leaks!

Nice work!!

Tony - Very thorough job! Did you get that engine starting problem solved? I bet you're ready to put the pedal to the metal.

See ya.........Dave
