Is my EGR valve test correct?

'85 L98- rough idle. New plugs, wires, TPS etc., etc. I've replace all vacuum hoses since those plastic vacuum tubes are so brittle they break if you look at them!

Down to the EGR- 140,000 and the original EGR. After taking it off, it was cruddy to say the least. When I apply vacuum to the valve, no movement whatsoever. All I get is a hiss within the body of the EGR I'm right when I think this is toast, correct?

By the way, I read several threads about how difficult is was to get the 3/8 nuts off to remove the EGR. I used a small mini open end with one side "hooked" at an angle and it was easy....although I used very little pressure to get the nuts loose.....seems like they were maybe too loose!

Clean the EGR with solvent (no smoking allowed) and shake it after the cleaning. You should hear a "click click" (don't know how to immitate it better than this...) sound from inside the valve. If everything else fails replace the valve with a new one; it is relatively inexpensive.

You are right about how easy it is to remove the EGR valve. My mechanic here removed it in a matter of a few minutes from the intake manifold.

Cheers

I say replace the EGR and be done with it. For about $50, it's not worth cleaning it with all the work you have to do to get to the EGR.

A hiss and no movement. I say it is toast . I believe the hiss means vacume leak, which is the reason for no movement .

I agree with Edmond, replace with a new valve. It is cheap.
