is the corvette in danger?

A very good read by Rex Roy. The government will select the cars we "want". Do you really think that the Vette is one of them. It is on par with the Hummer and other "wasteful" extravagances. Also do you think that Pelosi et al. would ever own/drive the cars that they will push down your throat? Their dream is an electric Smart car for the masses. Now how are you going to get 3 child seats in a Smart? they are so out of touch that they consider Washington DC style traffic to exist in all 50 states.
If the vette survives it will be a 4cyl. econo/sports commuter. The Mustang was started that way.

If we let the 'anti-auto' politicos decide what people want and need, it will be our own fault if the Corvette goes away. These people have never been car people yet they are always trying to tell us what to drive and they will never understand why people want cars like the Vette. Too many people in government consider everyone else as little children that have to be protected from our own decisions. I'm not liking the way things are going right now.

Now that the government has its hand in the auto industry it is likely that vehicles that do not fit the criteria for "energy efficiency" will be eliminated. To me, that would include the Corvette, Viper, Camaro SS, and the Challenger R/T. I do not believe that the government will be concerned about car afficiondo's feelings that these cars continue to be manufactured.

I remember when Pontiac really built excitement. I had a 1974 Formula 400. That car rocked. GTO'S, Bonneville's, Grand Prix's, Grand Am's. RIP. You know the wigs are coming after us NEXT.

How correct you are!! The next step (it might take a few years after this present dust settles) is to make life miserable to own a car that does not fit the mold. Like VERY strict EPA/ inspections, mpg levels and TAX. BUT it will all settle down after Obama's third term is over.

The government is good for building $12.000 toilet seats. Let's see how good they are building automobiles.

Little bit of perspective here:
The same Federal government that's apparently incompetent to know that one of the two 747's that serve as Air Force One when POTUS flies it is being used for a photo-op that freaks out the daytime populace of lower Manhattan, at a taxpayer cost of $329,000, is now going to decide for us what kind of car we can drive, we kind of health care we should get, and how we derive our energy resources.

:hb

Change you can believe in, whether you like it or not.

I had hoped that with the prospect of Chevrolet surviving the restructuring of GM, that the Corvette would also survive. However, with the Federal Government holding a majority of the equity in a newly structured "lean and green" GM, I too now firmly believe that cars such as the Corvette will be discontinued real soon!

Any vehicle that does not meet the present administration's muster as being green :pukeenough will be discontinued. I whole heartedly agree with TUNA's and BWING's assessments. They are spot on!

NJLOUC: you're absolutely correct!. We all will be scorned as wasteful and demonic for driving a Vette or any high performance vehicle! They will both legislate and tax high performance car owners to death - making us pay dearly for owning these vehicles.

I suspect that they will tax carbon emissions on these cars as well making it so cost prohibitive to own them that it will be only possible to afford driving to the local weekly summer car show and back home again.

I also agree that Washington politicians are out of touch with those of us in the real world. While hundreds of thousands are losing their jobs each month, they spend their time figuring out ways to wastfully spend more money. I have no respect for any of them!:W

I guess we can all be thankful that GM made the Vette this long,
AND with the V8 a AND all the power, But I hope you guys are wrong
and the Corvette lives on

Government mandated automobiles. . .

I can't agree more strongly that what all of you have stated. Of all of the people or agencies who determine what we drive, The federal government stands heads and sholders as the absolutely 'The Worst' at designing our transportation needs. But I think you are all missing one VERY IMPORTANT issue, If they have determined that cars like the new Camaro, Corvette and the Challanger are not necessary, we do what is the only reasonable reaction, WE DON'T BUY ANYTHING THEY PROPOSE !

If the Corvette is 'Outlawed' then I'll look at what the Europeans or Japanese have to offer. But I'm NOT GOING TO BE FORCED into buying a Nancy Perlosi-mobile ! I don't give a damn if you call me anti-american, if I want a V8, I'm going to buy a V8, or I ain't buying anything, period. And if enough people are like minded, then the 'Government Owned' automobile companies will find out that we don't and won't be forced into buying their eco-crap, and sales are 1/100th of what they used to sell then the american companies will finally go out of business, just like any operation run by government bureaucrats let loose on the population.

I'll empty the garage, put the Corvette up on blocks and disconnect the battery and find some used piece of crap to drive and let the money go into a CD's or money market funds or something else. But I'm not going to be forced into doing something mandated by Washington DC and as more and more people refuse to buy eco-boxes, the industry will finally be phased out of existance. ;help

killain .. I think that is the underlying motive. The newly formed socialistic USA is very anti- anything that reminds them of the past and is totally in favor of payback to the lobbyists/highest bidder as well as the environmentalists. They killed the banking industry and are on a roll! None of them will ever think a Vette is a good use of resources and therefore the Vette is toast! Next, like the good libs that they are will bend over and do somersaults for any foreigner rather than help a fellow American. They think it is more PC to be foreign - due to a guilt thing. So all US car companies must go!!
In summary not only is the Vette toast, but the USA is also. If you buy a foreign brand car (sometimes made in USA) you will do exactly what was planned. Note how the "southern" senators always vote against aid to Detroit since they have Toyota, BMW, Honda and others built in their states - Payola???
I just cant wait to trade my Vette for a Fiat or a Tioda (Toyota) that gets the same mileage as the Vette. HAHA/ LOL
