hello, I have a 96 Collector Edition LT-1 please forgive me if my question is stupid but here it is ,I have noticed when I am driving my engine temps are reading right in the middle but if I am at a long light or at a idle like in traffic jam my temps go way up,but when I start to move they go back to the middle of guage. My engine coolant levels ar ok.Does anyone else have this happen to them, hopefully it is normal.

Probably normal. I cannot speak personally about the LT-1 but my L98 is that way. I think I have seen others here that experience the same charateristics you describe. It would be helpful to know however how high is way up!

Get a flashlight and see if you need to clean between the radiator and the condensor...this is a problem with the C-4...they are bottom feeders

My 95 does that with the AC off, with AC on it does it but not as bad. Sounds normal

Sounds normal. With a 180 thermostat, you should be running at around 188-190 normally. In traffic, this can rise fast but not to worry. Your electric cooling fans will kick in at 228. If they don't and your temp rises above that, then you may have a problem.

It's normal, although it's something you'll have to decide on about whether you want to do something to change it or not.

Before I changed anthing on mine, it would normally run around the 200 range, and stopping in traffic it would start to climb. So far I've changed to a 165 thermostat and put in a hypertech thermomaster chip so that my fans come on sooner. Now my temps are usually around 175 while cruising, and the temp does still creep up when I'm sitting in traffic although not nearly as fast as it did before, it usually doesn't make it above 195 or so. What I still have left to do is I'm replacing the factory radiator with a two core all aluminum in hopes that it keeps the temp at a more even range and keep it from climbing as much.

My temperature now stays below 190* underway (180 thermostat). When stopped in traffic, drive-through etc. it would hit 220*. I have just had the PCM reprogrammed to energize the fans at 207* low speed, and that is now the max. I use 2 bottles of Redline Water Wetter and keep the area between the condensor and radiator free of debris. Cooling is now a non issue.

The readings you describe are normal for your engine's cooling system.

if you have never or not done it lately i would look for crap between the rad and condsensor. all kinds of stuff gets pulled into that area. and when was the last time you put a new rad cap on or a T-stat?? there cheap and could help too. or you could look into haveing your OBDII rre-programed to have the cooling fans come on sooner then 228. us early OBDI have to change the prom chip for that, mine comes on at 205.
just my 2 cents.

Thats because with the ac on the fans are always running.
