not that this solves either of your problems, but when I reassembled my 81's dash (torn apart to change the pedal cluster) I neglected to hook up the octopus looking thing on the heater control. I guess it defaults to "repent you sinner" as it was hot as hell driving. I hooked it up a week later and .. ta da... no more sweatin to the oldie!
 
I purchased another switch and it's now fixed! Thanks for all of your help.
