Ok i am redoing the interior of my 76 and when I pulled away the passenger's side dash if found the following (see attached picture) not hooked up and just hanging there. Any idea what this is? Looks like a heat sink that you would find on a computer processor. Perhaps a noise reducer for the radio?

I did a Google for Delco DS501..only thing I came up with was its a "Doorknob" germanium power transistor used in some vintage car radios. ;shrug

It's the "convector" for the radio - there wasn't room to package it in the radio chassis, so it's remote-mounted; it's the output section of the radio - the DS-501's are the audio output transistors.

Oh the convector! Um...what is a convector? I am going to put a custom sound system in there so I am guessing I don't need that correct? Anyone want a convector?

A convector is a convection heat sink that convects heat away from one big a$$ power transistor. It's mounted outside the radio because there's not enough air flow inside the radio box to cool it sufficiently. It should be mounted with the fins vertical to allow air to rise(or convect) between them.
You will probably have externally mounted heat sinks on the case of your new system. You may remove the convector as it appears the original system has already been replaced. It was probably an 8 track player. High tech, man.

Thanks for the explanation. I can always count on the boards to come through with the answer.
