My hydraulic jack wont fit under my 87 with greenwood ground effects. I think I need to change the starter. Any secrets on how to get car in the air so I can access the starter? Stock Jack?? Any recomendations on what kind of replacement starter to use?;help

Drive it up on a double layer of 2x12 ? enough room then to get the jack under ?

Put towels down in front of each wheel. Put wood blocks on towels (keeps the blocks from slipping) drive car on to towels then up on blocks to gain clearance for jack. Use wood blocks on jack plate to clear ground effects. If possible, use truck/RV jack stands (they go up higher) for more under car room. I've never replaced anything major with anything but OEM or Delco. Good luck

Thanks for your replies I actually saw on a mustang site how they built a ramp using 2x10s. Only problem is that my car isn't starting so I'll have to push it up any sort of ramp. Anyway to jump the seleniod from under the hood? Of course it died in an inconvienent spot.

:duh hard to drive it with no start.

not sure if you can get at the selonoid or not. jump the termnal with the purple wire to the batt connection . but if selonoid is toast that won't do any good.

No matter what you do, you are going to need to push the car to get it on some sort of ramp or just a sheet of wood.

I drive my Vette up on 1 in sheets of wood then block it with 2in or 3in blocks of wood so it doesnt move. It is safe and then you can get your jack under there.

Where were you going to jack the car up (What spot/what part of the car is the jack putting pressure on)?

DO NOT use the stock jack to support the car while you work on it.

Use blocks and a floor jack as suggested above or, do like I do with my C4. I drive the front up on 2x4s, turn the wheels right to full lock, then come in from behind the left front wheel with my floor jack with a block on the jack pad then lift the front cross member.

There are any number of reman starters out there. Just avoid the low-end of the market.

Thank you so much for your help It's been driving me crazy....I want to fix it asap. I think I need to jack the front from what I understand the starter is located on the passenger side just behind the tire. correct me if I'm wrong. but nontheless I have to lift the whole front end to replace the starter.

Well I took the battery out and had it tested at Sears they said the battery was no good. The battery looked new so I took it to the local autoparts store where it came from car quest and they tested the battery it is a 60 month battery and was stamped january of 2008 they said the test concluded the battery was still good......I then felt the need for a third opinion so i took it to my buddy who works at a local shop as a mechanic he tested it and he said the battery is fine. The guy at the local autoparts store said Sears is notorious for giving false readings to get you to buy a new battery....I have a feeling that if it was a die hard battery that was still under warranty the test would have concluded that the battery was still good. So buyer beware!!!!
