I read somewhere that someone had a problem with the oil coating on the K&N coating the wires in the MAF sensor. He claimed that when cleaned it (the MAF) the car ran normal again.
I would like to put on the SLP Claw, but I'm a little concerned now about the above problem because the Claw uses 3 of these filters and I know the oil is necessary for filtration.
Anybody hear of such a thing?

Pete

He must have over oiled the filter to have that happen. I have never had that happen to me.

Exactamondo.

When reoiling these filters just spray until the white cloth turn purple.....hence the reason for the purple dye. When it turns purple STOP. People ALWAYS just keep spraying like they are trying to paint the darn thing and it ends up soaking wet in K&N juice. Therefore it coats the "hot wire" on the MAF and the computer can't read airflow therefore crappy running....Just keep it lean on the oil and you'll be fine...enjoy your new airfilters.

I never had a problem with mine. Cleaned and re-oiled many times. Too much oil and you'll have a problem. I have a feeling they may sometimes come with too much oil when brand new.
I'd clean and re-oil a new one just to be sure.

Just an FYI: The stock filter housing will out-flow just about any engine found in a C4. It is far cheaper to cut the top of the factory lid off, and buy a K&N filter to fit in place of the stock filter. You will gain the same amount of HP as the 'claw' so there are no worries there.

When I bought mine last year was unsure of when the last time the K&N was cleaned/oiled and, like changing the oil, plugs, lube job etc when buying a "new to me" vehicle I performed the maintenence. I must have put a tad too much oil on the filter because almost immediately after starting I got my first "service engine soon" light and code 34 (MAF). I had to change both my MAF relays and this cured the problem. Follow instructions above to allow for correct servicing of the K&N. :Steer

Ditto comments on the K&N. Over oiling is the problem, not the filter. I've been using K&Ns for 10 years now on all my cars without problem.

I usually let my filter set for several hours after re-oiling and if I get any drips out of it, I over oiled it. No drips, no problem.

Exactly. If you have the time, let it sit for a while, to 'air dry' before putting it back in... 10+ years of K&N use here, too, without a problem.....
