I know the benefits of a K&N air filter will allow more airflow...but won't that mess up the air/fuel mix thus causing your engine to run too "lean" ? Would I have to mess with the carb after an install of a K&N air filter? Also, whats the deal with the XStream filer, any opinions on that?

Tony,
I have installed K&N's in every vehicle I have ever owned. Caburated or EFI and never had to change the tuning due to the filter. The change is small enough that it really is not necessary.

In one article I read a K&N gave about 3-5hp over the standard paper filter and in one case a filter of a similar construction to K&N by another manufacturer actually decreased the horsepower by a small amount over the original paper element.

I have used K&N`s on many cars mainly because they can be cleaned and re-used. They were popular on motorbikes a long time ago and due to the small capacity it was recommended that you re-jet the carbs but in a car with an engine your size I doubt if it would be required.

In theory the XStream filter should flow more air due to the inherent design of having more filter area exposed. ;)

Ken, I have heard of those XStream tops getting sucked down into the carb!

I've not used one. I would think that if they attach like a regular air cleaner top, you could put a nut below the top and Loc-Tite it in place. That would keep it from sucking down in the center. If that is all that is happening.

The K&N flows a bit more air, but it supposedly also "directs" the air through and out of the filter. They say that it flows air in a straighter path (or creates less turbulent air). Less turbulent air supposedly flows better through the system and allows for better combustion.

I have a 3" K&N for sale if you're interested. Cleaned, oiled, and ready to go!

I have heard and read somewhere that turbulent air will give you a better air/fuel mixture. I have seen intakes with smoothed and polished curved grooves in the runners to help swirl the air around for a better mixture.
