I know there are many K&N threads here.

I recently installed one in my '84 and when I started it up, on came the check engine light. It is throwing a code 42. EST.

I called a friend of mine who has a '99 and was telling him about it and he said the same thing happened to him. New K&N, light came on. He said he put the old filter back and off went the light.

I haven't put the old filter back because it was totally clogged when I bought the car.

Is the K&N confusing the ECM by allowing more air than it is calibrated for??

Wondering

You probably over-oiled the K&N, whuch is not an uncommon problem with people unfamiliar with the gauze filter elements. Clean it, allow it to thoroughly dry, then re-oil with a very light mist and you should be okay. The MAF will eventually burn off the excess oil as long as it's not too badly soaked.

That is the problem with K&N the oil gets all over the wires and it takes a day or two to burn off , after oiling filter you let it set for 24 hours before you install it.;) Have a:bar

I did not oil it. It came in a bag already oiled. I think there is another reason that the code is showing. It is code 42....EST.

I just started the car after having it on stands for a week. I hooked up the neg cable and it ran around the block with no code. Then all of a sudden...code 42 again.

Must be a loose wire.

I bought a K & N filter for my 4runner, and the package said pre oiled. It was soaked with the crap. I cleaned and and re-oiled it. I think my brother threw a code 42. I will show him this thread and see what the deal is.

Thanks Craig, I really would appreciate that. It is making me a little crazy.

Ihave found a good mechanic that owns a Vette and he said he could figure it out and it was no big deal. I would like to find it first though!!!!

I've put K&N filters in all my cars without problems. Then again, I prop the K&N on it's side and let it sit for a few hours to drain any excess oil before I install them. I do the same after cleaning and re-oiling them.

I do the same thing. Usually let it sit at least half the day or even longer, then I wipe any excess off the filter frame and on the filter grill. It is easy to put too much on, so just go sparingly.

I had that also. It turned out to be the EGR switch from taking it off two times and putting it back on twice from the rebuilding issues....... I am not sure how this relates to your problem, sorry.

DTC 42 indicates a problem with EST, or electronic spark control. Installation of a K&N Filter would not cause that. My guess is, the EST problem is coincidental to the filter change. I'd clear codes and see if the light comes on again. If it does, and you have code 42 stored, then troubleshoot the car per the service manual insructions in the section on DTC42.

I don't know what K&N says and I really don't care but when you buy these filters....clean em out....

After its dry reoil the OUTSIDE ONLY!!!!!! SO many people oil the inside of the filter and all that does it help a LITTLE with filtration but most of the excess on the fibers end up on you bloody MAF and guess what Ping codes and Ping Wallet lighter.

Just dust the outside till it turn redish and stop.

That sounds like good advice. I dont know what they mean by pre-oiled, but mine was soaked.

I agree; been using the K&N for 4 years, using the same method -- never had problem.

I've used K&N for a number of years on the Vette' and the Toyota with no problems. I even have the MAF descreened on the Vette' and haven't had any issues.

Robert,
My two cents here is that just because a mechanic owns a Vette does not mean he understands one or knows how to work on one. Last year I took mine to a local garage. The guy owns a C3. I felt comfortable letting him do the work. However he didn't correctly diagnose or repair my problems, and I eventually had to use the Chevy dealer to get the performance back up to par. Needless to say, he will never see my car at his shop again.
