When I sold my K-5 Blazer after buying the vette, I found that the good condition, loaded Blazers similar to mine were selling for between $7k and $10k. Totally beatup ones (not uncommon for a 4x4 Blazer... they never stop running) were selling between $3k-$5k.
I ended up selling my Blazer cheap to a family member who needed it for $4k. And that was a total steal for him. His friends are so jealous that he got such a good vehicle for half of what it would have normally cost on the open market.
The Kelly Blue Book value for this vehicle?
$1500
No relation to the real world whatsoever. You would never find anything more than a rusted out hunk for that little money. And that's what their formula said a loaded Blazer in excellent condition in my area was worth. How useless a guide.
I suspect that Kelly Blue Book has some sort of agreement with insurance companies to totally underate car values so that when your car is totalled or stolen, you get screwed on the totalled value for it. You can't buy even half of a similar replacement for the pitance they'll pay out usually.
When we lost our '73 Nova (which was in superb condition.. a classic car!), the insurance company gave us less than half of what it would cost to buy another one. When we showed them ads for these cars, and asked how we were supposed to replace it, they did their own research and showed us ads that corroberated their totalled payout.
It didn't matter to them that their ads were for cars that were rusted out, didn't have engines, and we're located in backwater communities across the whole U.S thousands of miles away from us. Useless.
It's all a big scam.
