Ken's Engine Project... Part II - 2003

Installed the rear studs today. Man, I can make any job a pain-in-the-ass; it took me probably five hours to do both rears. :eyerole

What's that about "Murphy's Law"? :L :cry ;LOL

Ya know, I was just thinking that although I may get frustrated sometimes with this ****, I sure am learning a lot about my Corvette this time through! Getting a lot of hands-on experience, and my aching body is showing it too. :L :cry ;LOL

Started to put everything back together today and was following the manual regarding torque specs on the caliper bolts. The book specifies 133 lbs/ft for the rears, and I assumed the specs were the same for the bolts on the Baer front calipers. Wrong, one snapped on me well before hitting 133 lbs/ft of torque. Luckily, very luckily for me, the snapped-off portion in the caliper bolt hole was easily removed with my fingers; no drilling required. Whew!!

So, the next stop is the Chevy parts counter for four more bolts for the rears, and it looks like a machine shop will probably be the best bet for the bolts on the fronts. The rears have a shoulder to them, that's why I am going to the dealer for those, but the bolts for the fronts have me exasperated.

Here's where I mentioned in another thread, where someone was complaining about Ecklers, that I might be voicing my displeasure with some respected Corvette names we all know.

I had the Baer "Track" system front brake upgrade performed by Dick Guldstrand's shop in Culver City, CA. I also had them order and install new slotted rotors on the rear, but in the stock size; I just wanted the front and rear appearances to match.

Today when I snapped that bolt, we started looking closely at it and discovered that it was modified, possibly cut with a hacksaw, to the desired length. The threads weren't even cleaned up after the cut had taken place! Not only that, but there were two from one bolt manufacturer on one side and two with no manufacturer's marking on the other. They both had a numeral 10.9 though, so evidently they were they same grade.

My problem is the fact that the instructions that accompanied the Baer system makes mention of using the supplied bolts and red Loctite! What happened to the bolts in the kit? And why did Guldstrand use inferior caliper attachment fasteners!!

I had heard stories in the past about shoddy work coming out of that shop but I have always chosen to ignore it; who really knows the circumstances in a story that gets handed down word-of-mouth. But now after this...

This is just my latest in a series of discoveries regarding services not being up to par when it comes to the money being spent. The combination sadness/anger you feel when the reputation you pay so dearly to have your car associated with lets you down is disheartening to say the least. Is there no one we can trust anymore? Are we really relegated to the old adage of "If you want something done right, do it yourself!" People just don't care anymore once they get the money in their hands. Adios sucka!

Oh, by the way, the bolts were available, and the earliest he said he could get them would be Tuesday. Geez! You can't even by a lug nut for that matter; they didn't have those for me either.

Damn, I just remembered that I forgot (remember to forget??) to take pictures of my header repair. The guy, Doug Holmberg, did a hell of a job! Not only that but it was done the same day and cost me less than half of what I was prepared to pay.

Now I just have to recoat it before we reinstall the engine.

I did get the lug nuts from an auto supply house, but I can't put the wheels back on until I get those caliper bolts. Maybe Harbor Chevrolet will have them tomorrow when I go to my monthly meeting. Gotta find 'em somewhere; I'd hate to waste Monday too on this same job!

Oh yeah, the rotors are mounted backwards here; I'm a moron too!

Header Repair

I'd be very interested in seeing some pictures of that and also any explanation on how he did it as I will be doing the same thing seeing as how nobody makes the headers to fit my heads. It's all in another thread, but they are made to fit my car, just not the angle of the spark plugs:( :mad

Just for you Lou, I stopped on my way to my club meeting this morning and snapped these off...

Now I gotta get 'em recoated. I think TPiS utilizes Jet-Hot coatings on their headers, what should I do for my TPiS headers now that we've destroyed that tube's coating? Along with that suggestion, has anybody recommendations for coatings in the Southern California, preferably in the Los Angeles area.

Thank You

Hope I didn't make you late for the meeting:L Looks good, shouldn't have any trouble with that ol' plug now eh?

These are the bolts that gave me fits. How could such a reputable shop install mis-matched bolts when the manufacture of the brakes sent bolts and Loctite with the kit I'll never know. :eyerole

  • Wheels are all done and back together.
  • The headers have been dropped off at at Engineered Applications, LLC for recoating and should be ready for pick-up Thursday or Friday.

    and...
  • I've made the decision and bought the analog gauges. I am un-digitizing my dash! :D

The rest will be carbon fiber faces too. I hope it looks good when they're in place. ;)

We may start reassembly by the weekend if everything goes right. But then, since when does anything go right for me the first time out anyway! :hb

Ken, that looks just like my gauges only with the carbon fiber, and memory on the tach. You will really like them once installed. Mine gave me a choice of white, green, or red back glow. I am sure you will have choices as well.

I assume you are running the companion gauges for the engine functions as well.

Of course Chris, but I didn't think pictures of those would be necessary; these pictures give you an idea of what I'm installing, that's all. ;)

I couldn't remember if yours were the carbon fiber faces or not. I knew you were running Auto Meter gauges but I didn't know which ones.

Lou, congratulations on the trailer to go with the new truck. Now that the cat's out of the bag :o come springtime you gotta post some pictures. :upthumbs

Okey Dokey

I'll have truck pictures in a week and a half, the trailer probably not until April, or as soon as the snow melts (if ever, 6 more inches coming tonight).:(

Ken are you going to use a Carbon Fiber Bezel? Or are you going to keep it black?

The bezel? No, it will be polished. The picture really doesn't do 'em justice; they're sorta 3-D looking in reality. :cool

...do you end up with screws left over?

But of course! :D

This makes the third time I've had it apart Len, and I get further into it each time. I'm learning a lot about the C4 interior, but still have a ways to go understanding some of it. ;)

When I re-did the interior the first time, I actually ordered up the complete set of screws to replace the mis-matched stuff that was there. Naturally, when I was into it a second time the screws got all redistributed again, no matter how hard I tried to keep them sorted. It's a good thing I'm not into concours showing with my vehicles. :o

Nice job Ken.

This thread is getting long, so I thought I better see what all the fuss is about!
Looking forward to more updates and pics.

Nice work!
