Since I got ripped on a L-88 hood I want to know if a L-82 gives additional clearance over what my 1982 hood does. Keep in mind I have my functional air induction thing still on my vettes hood and even with it removed the buldge in my hood is not wide enough in this where the air cleaner is rubbing.

Problem I am having is this. I have a 1984 crossfire air cleaner on the car and it rubs the bottom of my stock hood at the front of the air cleaner. So I am wondering if the L-82 raised hood would give me additional clearance in this area.

Some pictures would be helpful if you have them and maybe some measurements.

But before will a 77-79 L-82 hood bolt to my 1982??????? I have heard the latches and so on are in a different location.

No. No additional clearance with an L-82 hood. You might take a look and getting your hands on the 82 crossfire air cleaner set up and running your stock hood.

:)

ZIP PRODUCTS show 77-82 L88 hood as one size, different on earler years. catalog says adds 2.25 inches of clearance.

Yeah I anticipated this and did buy another crossfire system with a air cleaner. Worse comes to worse I will just have that air cleaner chrome plated.

Only difference is this air cleaner came from a camaro, aside from the intake elbow looks the same though.

I took mine to custom metal fabricator, who sawed off the "Elbow" and closed the hole. Then I had the Air-cleaner, valve covers, & fan all powdercoated to match the cars colors!

I didn't need it since I got rid of the stock manifolds for headers.
I'm not convinced that it hepled with "cold wheather" startes anyway.
And I feel the engine runs better on the "forced" COLD air anyway.

my.02:D

I can't do that to mine though. I still need a hot air pipe for emissions, so I have only two choices a stock air cleaner or the 84 air cleaner. I honestly like the 84 air cleaner better since it covers so much stuff under the hood and looks real nice polished LOL. But until I get clearance cant use it.

So Cal Emmissions?

In CT after to car is 25 years old it is exempt from emmissions.
Is there any point in time where people in So. Cal. Don't have to worry about it?

Because of the "Topless" Mods, are you going to have to pass some type of hands on inspection?

the only time I personally have ever seen a safety inspection require in California is when you try to re-register a car that has had a salvage title on it. Aside from that I have never heard of anyone having to go through a safety inspection here. Well, granted some cars out here would make candidates for it :boogie But I would rather go through an emmisions test then a safety inspection for registration any time of the day.

I doubt even in the event of a safety inspection this car would fail due to it being a convertible conversion. It has functioning shoulder belts, there is no frame differences, it has all the factory convertible stuff in it except the door wedges, has factory convertible door glass.

Yeah, When I lived in Virginia they had safety inspections but couldnt care less how much your car polluted.. but if your defrosteers didnt work, or one of your blinkers was out you were SOL..

In california you can have a car with no front clip and headlights duct taped to the radiator, but heaven forbid if it doesnt pass smog.

Jeff, while my hood isn't a true induction hood, the raised cowl would/should certainly give you the clearance you need. It's the same as an '77-'81 hood, but with the taller cowl. LINK (6th hood down on the page)

I am in the process of replacing the 350 in my 80 with a stout 383 and it won't fit under the stock hood. I like the look of the 80 style on your 80, almost can't tell the difference from the outside. I want to keep the "stock" look. My question is, with the ACI piece, is the inside a smooth finish? Vanacor's has the 80 hi-rise also, for about half the price. Did you hear of them before going with ACI? I heard good things about ACI, and nothing about Vanacor.

Thanks

Chris

Hey Chris, yeah, the ACI hood is smooth on both sides. When I bought my hood, I didn't know I was getting an ACI hood. I bought my hood from one of the big three catalog vette places. I later learned that they all use ACI hoods. Had I known that, I woulda made the drive myself and purchased it. (They are only 2 hours from me.)
I can't recall hearing anything good or bad about Vanacor. You can likely search for their name in the forum search section and see what comes up.

I can vouch for ACI though, as they gave us a full tour of their facilities as part of CruiseFest V. They are a solid operation and would trust them to get you an excellent part.

I think topless82vette can tell you now, it's not always about getting the cheapest price. :)
