If my 5th digit in vin# is a L, but I have a CMS engine suffix that is a 350 220hp, what is it? Cause from what I have been reading, a L48 is a 350 185hp and the L82 is the 350 220hp. Thanks:confused

and this is on a 1978. And the 5th digit is supposed to be a 4 if it's a L82

From what I can tell from my books is the L-48 fifth position on the VIN is L and the L-82 fifth postition is suppose to be X. My Vette is an L-48 and the engine code on the block is CUT. So if your VIN shows L in the fifth postion, it should be an L-48. Thats the way I interpret it.

Looking further, the engine code CMS is the L-82 with 3 speed auto. Do you think that the engine has been swaped out? You definately have the better engine.

Yes I do agree on part of it. L is supposed L48 and the #4 is L82. But, L48 is 350@185 hp and I have the CMS suffix which is supposed to be the L82. I may be wrong with this and I am totally confused.

I suppose it could of been swapped, but I didn't think it was. I was hoping for a perfect matched car. Thanks for the replies

Usually on the engine block is the last part of the VIN #. This isn't always the case, but the numbers are usually very close. My '79 L-82 matches the block and VIN exactly.

L-48 or L-82?

To get another answer to possibly which engine the car came from the factory with.

Look at the Tachometer. I believe the red lines are different for each engine.
