Turbos! That’s is the question.
You see I posted a very long time ago (2003 I think) regarding forced induction possibilities on an L98 and was dead keen on turbo charging after seeing a Callaway in action.
Well back then, I couldn’t find any turbo package available for L98 Vettes, but now I have found a single turbo kit offered from HP Performance and would like to see if anyone here has one of these kits on their L98, and/or can suggest a better alternative.
This is the package I’m talking about:
http://www.turbochargedpower.com/85-96%20Corvette.htm
My power goal is 400-450ish horsepower to the crank, and the stage 1 kit can do this on the stock motor, with only a few changes. The necessary parts for these changes are included in the kit.
Any kind of complete and straight forward performance packages is favourable because I’m in Western Australia and don’t want to find myself having to frequently mail order parts from overseas.
Also, because my mechanic is possibly the only specialist Vette garage in the state, he is often very busy with lots of clients. Most of the time he is busy with very lengthy, restorative projects.
So anything that could reduce the amount of time he has to spend timing and tuning the thing the better.
So as you can imagine, I find this turbo system very appealing compared to a more involved 383 stroker rebuild I was initially considering (although I may need to rebuild the engine anyway [Odometer @ approx: 170,000 km OR 105,633 miles])
I may also need the Th-700R4 rebuilt and reinforced for extra power.
Also about supercharging, the only ones that seem to be suitable to an L98 Vette are centrifugal, which seems to me as a slower revving alternative to a single turbo.
Also, the supercharger (the one that was/is offered by ATI) is actually more expensive then the turbo system it seems.
So basically I want to know what you guys think of this system.
I am a little concerned about the way the intercooler is mounted (in front of the radiator) but I am told that they have had no problems.
A lot of you might think that with the cost of engine rebuild + turbo + transmission rebuild that I may as well buy a C5.
Unfortunately the oldest C5’s wont be exempt from Australian design compliance until 2012, so if I got one now I would need a right-hand-drive conversion and loads of other changes before I could drive one on our roads. That would probably be pricier.
