I was wondering if anyone could offer just a rough price range for some of the more involved repairs for a C5. Im just curious what sorta ballpark things like an engine swap or a clutch change generally run. I know it will vary from shop to shop but I have zero reference point for repair costs on the C5. Thanks ya'll!

I have seen shop prices from about $75 per hour at smaller shops to $120 at others :eek

I have not seen a shop charge by the size of the job - when the clock runs, it runs...

There used to be a book of published standard charges for each task on each vehicle.

To remove the tranny and change the clutch on a C-5 was "X" hours and the shop was not supposed to charge beyond the standard.

One shop I USED to deal with always came up with some BS excuse to jack in an extra hour or two. "Those bolts were frozen in and I had to build a special left handed puller to get the " ......

Around here, it ranges from $65-90 an hour. They probably still use that book as a guide to estimate the time and cost. But I'm sure that estimate is quite healthy and they usually finish the work before that time. Of course, you wouldn't get the difference back.

With any dealerships in Florida (land of need and greed) you can only hope the technician doesn't take an extended coffee break while working on your vehicle! Shop costs run to $125.00 in some instances. Corvette work seems to have its own special pricing, and it isn't less. In my opinion, it is worth locating a reliable, knowledgeable independent shop to get work done.

That was caled a "flat rate" book. Every job or task had a set amount of time which the customer was charged no matter how long it took. Good (quick) mechanics could make extra hours by doing jobs quickly. I think that's all in the past now/

All shops use flat rate manuals, there are 2 or 3 diff ones, I know Chiltons is one of the most popular. Each job is allowed so much time, maybe a C-5 clutch is 8 hrs. gives service writer something to quote by. If the tech takes 10-12 hrs he will only get paid the 8 hrs. If your a good tech and you can do it in 6 hrs you get paid for 8, but if tech goes too fast and makes a mistake he eats the labor to go back and fix it. Sometimes the hrs. it takes to do the job are unrealistic to both the cust. and the shop or tech. I firmly believe that you should do some research of the local shop or dealerships to find a good one and stick with them, bouncing from shop to shop and going for the cheapest price isn't the best in the long run.:beer
