1971 454 T-Top
I just joined the forum. I recently purchased a 1971 454 with the LS-5 engine option. I have made some minor mods (Holley 750, Edlebrock 2-O manifold, MSD distributor, box and wires) and the car seems to be running ok. I seem to be getting an unusual amount of oil out of the dipstick when I wind it past 4 thousand...what is causing this?

Hey Mug

Firstly Im jealous.
Secondly sounds like positive pressure in the sump. I would in order

1 Check its not overfilled with oil, simple but common.
2 Check all the breather hoses and filters (if aftermarket) are not blocked.
3 Check compression of each cylinder, as rings may be worn.

Apart from that, Im open to suggestions.

Good Luck

If the PCV system is intact and functioning, you shouldn't have that symptom; make sure the intake side hose (valve cover to air cleaner base) is open and the flame arrestor isn't clogged, and check the exhaust side (PCV valve in valve cover and hose from there to carb) to make sure the PCV valve isn't clogged. If the PCV system is OK, you may have a major blow-by problem the PCV system can't handle.

Fix the dip stick

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the tips. I installed a new pcv valve and cheched vacuum hose throughout. I will give it a good thrashing this week. I also just changed the spring in the secondaries. The spring that comes standard with the Holley 4160 750 CFM is the stiffest and doesn't allow the secondaries to open all the way. I think this will give me a little more mid-range.

Thanks
MUG
