I asked this on CF but didn't get much help. Do you guys know what the thing right next to the AC compressor is? The clip is broke and it's held up by string right now, which is rather embarassing.

That's got it. The Air Diverter Valve. I don't think they are too expensive to replace. If you don't have to go thru emissions inspections, you can pull all of the AIR stuff out and get a AIR pump eliminator so you can keep using the same size serpentine belt.

Well, I don't have to go through emissions testing, even though I'm in CA. I wouldn't mind getting rid of my AIR pump and everything, but I've been thinking about going to the track this summer. Every year the local PD have a Street Car drag event, to keep street racing at bay. However, all of the entrants have to be street legal, so I figure they check the car first and all of the emissions gear is still required here, we just don't get smogged. Other than that, $$$ is a little tight, if it were'nt I'd like to convert to a true dual system and maybe even do it with high flow cats or something, so as not to run too stinky. Thanks guys, hopefully I won't require string in the near future (it used to have twist ties before!:crazy )

Those air diverter valves are more and more rare, hence pricey. You might be able to repair it, depending on where the break is. A careful super gluing of the plastic might be the easiest fix.

All that smog gear drains very little power, and removal from a street car offers a possible EPA fine of $5000. I can easliy smell a non-CATted car, as you apparently can.

The clip was broke before I bought the car so the plastic pieces are gone. I might try and make it look a little prettier. Do you know what years fit my 87? My first guess would be 85-88 (maybe just up to 87)? I haven't had a chance to really search yet, but I did notice a couple on ebay for some other years.

Upon re-examining the photo, it is not clear if the piece you are referring to is behind the diverter valve or the valve itself. Can you edit the pic and insert an arrow?

Nah. I'd be guessing, but I'd ask a Chevy dealer or a Corvette parts specialist, like J&D or The Last Detail. www.tld-corvette.com/catalog.htm

What's circled is what's being held up, there's a small post that it seems to slip onto and the clips that hold it in place are busted. It used to have some white twist ties, but they fell off upon touching the thing.
